  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Here’s this weeks WWW.

The Great GatsbyCurrently Reading

I’m around the 90% mark of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald at the moment. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never read this (and haven’t even seen the film). My reading of the classics has been limited pretty much to the Bronte’s, Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy so I’ve been meaning to broaden my range for a while.

I always find the language a bit of a struggle in classics (it takes me a while to get into the flow) but I have been very much enjoying the writing and the voice of the narrator.

A Long Way DownFinished three books this week, the first of which was A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. It’s about four people with very different backgrounds who meet on the roof of the tower block they’ve decided to commit suicide by jumping off. After a bit of an argument and some pizza they agree to wait a bit and see if they still want to kill themselves in a few weeks.

I still don’t know what to make of this. It’s well written and funny in places but there was just something a little bit uncomfortable about it. I don’t think it helped that I only saw the film a few weeks ago as I ended up comparing and my image of the characters was very much influenced by the actors who played them.

The Thousandth FloorThere was a bit of a theme this week as the second book finished, The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee, was also about someone falling off the top of a tower block. Although in this case the tower block was considerably higher.

It’s described as a kind of futuristic Gossip Girl as it’s set in Manhattan in 2118 and follows a group of privileged (and not so privileged) teenagers. There’s back stabbing, romance, obsession, drug use and blackmail. I have to admit I love this kind of read so it was perfect for me and that ending was incredible. I’m planning to post a review later this week.

The final book finished was Repressed by Elisabeth Naughton which is a romantic suspense. I quite like Elisabeth Naughton but found this one a little bit too predictable, although maybe I’ve just read too many of them.

Reading Next

At the moment I feel like I’m pretty much just waiting on Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas to be released on the 6th September. Although as I’m pretty much finished The Great Gatsby I do need to find something to tide me over.

I do have a decent haul of library books so will maybe pick up one of them. My most recent borrows are Echo Boy by Matt Haig and Longbourn by Jo Baker. I also still have Paige Toon’s latest novel The One We Fell In Love With which I bought from Amazon and really want to read as soon as possible.

In semi related news I managed to get tickets today to see Sarah J Maas when she comes to Glasgow in October. I’m soooo excited!!!

A Long Way DownExciting news this week as, after languishing on my Reading Next list for the last 30 years (ok probably 6 weeks), I’ve finally made a start on A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. I have to admit I haven’t read much, only a few pages, but there is something instantly likeable about the writing style so I have high hopes despite a slightly uncomfortable plot line.

As A Long Way Down is a physical book (which I stole borrowed from my brother) I’m also reading ebook Repressed by Elisabeth Naughton which I got from Amazon a month or so ago. I generally find Elisabeth Naughton books to be pretty enjoyable and quick reads. Perfect if you’re looking for a bit of romantic suspense (and who isn’t??).

I’m between audio books at the moment as I can’t find any that I particularly want to listen to so if anyone has any recommendations I’m open to suggestions.

Recently Finished

I had a look at my books read for this week and kind of gave myself a fright. I can’t believe I finished 6 books. Things have been a bit quieter at work so I’ve had a little more free time which I think I’ve used to read pretty much non stop.
Stealing Snow (Stealing Snow, #1)

The first book finished was Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige which I received from NetGalley. It was a retelling of the Snow Queen which unfortunately despite having the bones of a really good read turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. The reviews of it are mixed so there are others who love it. I just felt it was a little too rushed and not enough time was spent on character development or world building. You can read my full review here

My second book read, Resistance is Futile by Jenny Colgan, was Resistance Is Futilesomething completely different. It’s a science fiction/romance about a group of mathematicians brought together to solve a mysterious code that’s been received from space. It turned out to be a lot different from what I was expecting and after a slightly shaky start I ended up loving it. It’s quirky, cute and funny but has some really touching bits to it as well. Definitely one I’d recommend if you’re looking for something unique and out of this world. Again, I’ve actually posted a review which you can read here

Following Jenny Colgan I went on a bit of a Jeaniene Frost reading binge. I finished the audio book I’ve been listening to for the past couple of weeks, The Beautiful Ashes and then made the fatal mistake of moving onto her Night Prince series. I had meant to just start Once Burned as my next audio book but things got a little bit out of control, obsessive compulsive reading kicked in and I read and/or listened to all three books in the series so far over the weekend. Oops!

Reading Next

I think I’m going to abandon my previous reading next plan as I’ve been on a mad book acquiring spree over the last week or so and have managed to pick up a few new ones which I desperately want to read right now.

From NetGalley I was really excited to get The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee. Not sure what appeals to me about this but it does. Maybe just been too long since I’ve read any YA dystopian. Also managed to get Faithful by Alice Hoffman. Have to admit haven’t read any of her books so not sure if it’ll be for me or not but the plot sounds interesting.

Amazon had a sale on (never good) so I bought Paige Toon’s latest novel The One We Fell In Love With for 99p a couple of days ago. I love Paige Toon and it’s been on my wish list for a while so I don’t think I’ll hold out long.

Stealing Snow (Stealing Snow, #1)Unusually for me I currently have three books on the go at the moment. I tend to just focus on one book and one audio for when I’m driving but due to some indecisiveness at the weekend I somehow started two books at the same time.

The first of these books is Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige which I received from NetGalley. It’s another retelling (I know I have an addiction), this one based on the Snow Queen. I was very excited to get this but it does seem to have a lot of negative reviews. I’m only around 15% through so it’s very early days but so far I am definitely enjoying the writing. We’ll see what happens when I reach the love quadrangle.

ThResistance Is Futilee second book I’m reading is Resistance is Futile by Jenny Colgan. I started it at weekend as it sounded like quite a quirky, funny read and something a bit different from Jenny. For some reason though I’m struggling to get into it. I’m sure if I persevere I will love it but I’ve already wandered to another book which is not good. Hopefully I’ll wander back at some point 🙂

I’m also still listening to The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost. It’s the first in a paranormal/romance/urban fantasy series and this time instead of vampires and ghouls it’s angels and demons. Not quite enjoying as much as the Night Huntress series as the main character is kinda bugging me but it is good.

Recently FinishedUnhinged (Splintered, #2)

The first book finished this week was Unhinged by A.G. Howard. It’s the second book in the Splintered series which is based on Alice in Wonderland. I think this was possibly suffering from “middle book in a trilogy syndrome”. It seemed to take a while to get going and then took off towards the end to reach that big cliffhanger which means I’m probably going to have to read the third and final book to find out how it all ends….grrr!!

After that I was looking for something quick and light sThe Libby Garrett Intervention (Science Squad, #2)o decided to read some Kelly Oram. Kelly Oram is the author of one of my all time favourite happy books, Cinder and Ella (if you haven’t read it you should). After a bit of a search on Amazon I picked up The Libby Garrett Intervention, which is the second in the Science Squad series. It was quite a cute (but slightly more adult than I was expecting) story about Libby who’s in a toxic relationship which she refuses to give up until her friends stage an intervention. This is one of those books which has a positive (ish) message for young girls but somehow manages to be quite funny rather than preachy.

I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t resist re reading the previous book in the series The Avery Shaw Experiment. It’s quite similar and is about Avery, Libby’s best friend, who uses the seven stages of grief to try to get over a broken heart. It’s also a pretty good read and one I’d recommend if you’re looking for something light and fun.One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress #6)

Final book finished this week was One Grave at a Time by Jeaniene Frost which is book 6 in the Night Huntress series. This time Cat and Bones were doing a bit of ghost busting which made for something a little bit lighter than their usual end of the world, doomsday type stuff.

Reading Next

Yep, A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby is still on my reading next list. I think that makes it five or six weeks it’s been there now. I’m saying nothing… Other than that I’m not too sure what other books I will be reading. I have a book bingo challenge starting which I think will have me choosing books based on what picture is on the cover rather than the story.

I do have The Island by Victoria Hislop which is my next real life book club read. Have to admit I’m not overly excited by it as it’s not the type of book I usually go for. I’m just biding my time until it’s my turn to choose a book then it’ll be all zombie apocalypse or YA dystopian 🙂

I’m also thinking about trying a bit of Neil Gaiman with The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I think it’s well overdue that I read one of his books and I’ve had this on my kindle for a while. Just not sure if it’s the best one to start on.

Unhinged (Splintered, #2)I was looking for a book with either a title or author starting with U at the weekend (always a good way to choose books) so decided to pick up Unhinged by A.G. Howard. It’s the second book in the Splintered series which is based on Alice in Wonderland. I’m around halfway through at the moment and while it was a little bit slow at the start it’s starting to pick up the pace now.

I also have an audio on the go at the moment, The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost. It’s the first in a paranormal/romance/urban fantasy series and this time instead of vampires and ghouls it’s angels and demons. Really enjoying but not getting as much time as I’d like to listen to it as I haven’t been doing much driving.

Lying in WaitRecently Finished

First book finished was Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent. I requested this from NetGalley after hearing a lot of good things about it and I’m so glad I did as I think it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year and definitely the best thriller. It starts off with respectable couple Andrew and Lydia murdering someone and covering it up so it’s less of a who dunnit and more a why did they do it and will they get away with it. It’s one of those stories that you just can’t put down so I’d definitely recommend. You can see my full review here

The Ex FactorAfter Lying in Wait I was in need of something a little bit lighter so picked up The Ex Factor by Eva Woods which was another NetGalley request. It’s a story about four thirty something best friends who find themselves single at the same time. Rather than internet dating one of them suggests they set each other up with their ex boyfriends on the basis that they’ve already been vetted and just because they weren’t right for one of them doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be perfect for another. Unsurprisingly things get complicated and a little awkward.

I thought the start was a bit shaky but it turned into a pretty good read. What I really liked was that you were never 100% sure how it would all turn out. I’ll be posting a full review closer to the release date in September.

Reading Next

This week I am absolutely positively determined that I’m maybe going to make a start on A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. It seems to have been on my reading next list forever but I do really need to pick it up soon.

After a recent trip to the library I’m also thinking about making a start on Resistance is Futile by Jenny Colgan. I do love Jenny Colgan but must admit to picking up this one based on the cover and the title. It doesn’t hurt that it’s described on the back as “a charmingly quirky tale of love, friendship…and the possible obliteration of mankind”. Sounds good to me.

I was also very excited to receive The Trespasser by Tana French from NetGalley during the week. She’s another favourite author so I doubt I’ll be able to resist reading this latest offering for long 🙂

Lying in WaitCurrently Reading

Tuesday seems to have turned into my start a new book day as I’ve just started my latest read Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent. It’s a psychological thriller that I received from NetGalley and I’ve heard some really good things about it. It is still early days but I’m enjoying it a lot. There are definitely some interesting characters that, while I’m not sure I like them or agree with their attitudes, make for some fascinating reading.

Recently Finished

First book finished over the last week wasThe Paris Secret The Paris Secret by Karen Swan, which I received from NetGalley. I do love Karen Swan and this book was no exception. I think the highlight was probably the locations of Paris and Antibes which the author wrote so well I almost felt like I was there. I had a couple of little niggles about the romance and the male MC but would still recommend to anyone looking for a great holiday read. You can see my full review here

I then made the mistake of having a bit of a look around on Overdrive and found the The Moth in the Mirror by A.GThe Moth in the Mirror (Splintered, #1.5). Howard which is a novella in the Splintered series. It’s a sort of Alice in Wonderland retelling and the novella follows on from the first book in the series. It was an ok enough read, I’m just not always that keen on novellas and short stories as unsurprisingly I don’t feel like there’s enough depth to them. This one definitely didn’t add much to the series.

After that I decided to carry on with Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series which is becoming a bit of an addiction for me. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I finish them all. This time I was actually reading First Drop of Crimson which is a spin off from the main series and features a couple of the secondary characters. I did enjoy it but I kind of missed the main series.

More Than ThisFinal book read was More Than This by Patrick Ness. I’d got this from the library a few weeks ago and was sitting at the weekend flicking through books, read the first few paragraphs and got completely hooked. It starts with the main character dying, in a pretty brutal way, and then waking up which is definitely a great hook. It’s yet another absolutely fantastic book from Mr Ness and one I’d definitely recommend if you haven’t read it yet. It keeps you guessing until the very end and has some incredible world building and great characters. Personally I loved Tomasz. Hopefully I’ll post a review soon (once I’ve figured out what it all meant).

Reading Next

As I’ve finally made a little bit of progress (or abandoned the books that I’m never going to get to) on my reading next list I have some new books to add this week. I’m still planning to read A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby as I need it for a challenge I’m doing (and want to read) but I picked up a couple of new books from NetGalley that I doubt I’ll be able to resist for long. These are Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige and The Ex Factor by Eva Woods. I’m pretty excited about both as I’m in the mood for something light.

The Paris SecretI’m currently reading The Paris Secret by Karen Swan, which is my latest NetGalley book. I’m a big fan of Karen Swan and absolutely loved Christmas at Tiffany’s and Prima Donna so I’m excited to see what she does in her latest work. It’s very early days for me (I think I’m at chapter 3) but I thought the first chapter was excellent and really hooked you into the story. From the blurb and reviews I’m expecting some art and antiques, secrets, exotic locations and a bit of romance. Basically the perfect summer read.

I’m also kind of listening to the audiobook of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I say kind of because for some reason I just can’t get into it and will probably abandon it. I’m missing the Night Huntress books so I think I need something similar if anyone has any suggestions.

Recently Finished

Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)Things have been very busy at work at the moment so I haven’t managed to read as much as I hoped. Only three books finished, none of which were particularly taxing reads.

The first one finished was Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, a new adult romance about a girl trying to escape her past who meets a boy with a bit of a temper and a bad reputation. It was an enjoyable read and something a bit different from what I was expecting but I kind of felt like the on/off thing went on a little bit too long. There were also a few things that were just a bit too convenient and contrived. It’s good for what it is but I’ve read better.

GrinderContinuing my romance fest (when I’m stressed I turn to trashy novels) I also read Grinder by Samantha Whiskey. It’s about a hockey player who after he’s injured and his wife leaves him hires an old female friend to be the nanny for his daughter. Predictably enough there’s a lot of chemistry between the player and the nanny but both have their reasons for not wanting to cross the line from friendship. It was an OK read but the plot was very predictable and I found the main female character’s attitude annoying. Let’s just say if you know from the start what the deal is you have no right to complain about it and emotionally blackmail someone to get what you want. Sorry getting a bit ranty 🙂

The final book finished this week was This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost which I think is book 5 in the Night Huntress series. I had to switch from audio to ebook for this latest installment which is probably safer but a bit less fun. It was still an enjoyable read, just not as good as the previous one in the series in my opinion.

Reading Next

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby and The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley are probably at the top of my reading next list. The first because it fits a reading challenge I’m working on (and I’ve had it and wanted to read for a while) and the second because it’s a library book I’m due to return imminently.

After those, or possibly before I’m also looking forward to reading Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent which I received from NetGalley. I’ve seen some really good reviews but was waiting to read until around the release date.

Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)Currently Reading

I started  Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire yesterday and I literally haven’t been able to put it down since. There’s something wrong with the version I have as words and whole sections are repeated but there’s just something about it that has me completely hooked at the moment. At the start I thought it was going to  be the usual good girl meets a bad boy, they fight a bit but then can’t resist their attraction (which so far is kind of true) but it’s starting to feel a bit darker. I can’t wait to find out how it ends and suspect I will be forgoing some sleep 🙂

Recently Finished

All is Not ForgottenI’ve been very lucky this week and somehow managed to end up reading a lot of really good books.

The first of these was All is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker which I received from NetGalley. It’s a psychological thriller about the effects the horrific rape of a teenage girl have on a family and a community. It’s a little slow at the start and the narrator comes across as a bit arrogant but it’s intelligent, well written and by the end totally enthralling. You can read my full review here.

Melody Bittersweet and The Girls' Ghostbusting AgencyThe second book finished was Melody Bittersweet and the Girls’ Ghostbusting Agency by Kitty French. This couldn’t be more different from All Is Not Forgotten if it tried. It’s a fun and lighthearted story about Melody Bittersweet who decides to put her ability to see dead people to good use by starting a Ghostbusting agency. It’s full of quirky characters, a bit of romance, the odd ghost and lots of laughs. I loved it and you can read more in my review.

The next book read was The Deviants by C.J. Skuse. I received this is an ARC from NetGalley and couldn’t resist reading it straight away even though it’s not due out until the end of September. The Deviants It’s about a group of friends who’ve drifted apart after a tragedy but get back together to get revenge on a bully. It’s too early for me to post a review but I will say that I absolutely loved this book. I was expecting it to be good but I wasn’t expecting it to break my heart a little.

Also this week I finished my audio book  Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost. It’s the fourth in the Night Huntress series and could possibly be my favourite so far. These audio books are going to get me in so much trouble as they are completely addictive and absolutely hilarious. Anyone who spots me listening to them must think I’m a complete lunatic.Paper and Fire (The Great Library, #2)

The final book finished this week was Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine, which is the second in the Great Library series. It’s a story about libraries and books so it’s pretty much a dead cert that I’ll love it. In this series libraries pretty much run the world and have more power than any government or religion but power corrupts. It’s a fun, fast paced read but it finished on a cliffhanger so I’m left waiting for the next one….again.

Reading Next

Yet again it’s been another week where I’ve read literally none of the books on my reading next list. With my tendency to wander off plan I’m starting to think I shouldn’t bother. Anyway, it seems likely that I’ll read one or more of the following:

  • A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby – My brother loaned me this a few years ago but I’ve never read it (although I watched the film on Sunday night). It just so happens to fit a challenge I’m doing so that seems a good reason to finally pick it up.
  • This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost – There’s no way I can resist the next book in the Night Huntress series and I managed to find it on Overdrive so I’m good to go.
  • The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley – I spied this at the library a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t resist.
  • The Paris Secret by Karen Swan – This will probably be my next NetGalley read as I love Karen Swan (and Paris) and haven’t had a chance to read as yet.

All is Not ForgottenI’m still working my way through All is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker which I started over a week ago. It’s quite unusual for me to take so long to finish a book but I put it on hold over the weekend while I read a couple of other books. I’m just over the halfway point and I have to admit there were a couple of times I was tempted to give up altogether on it.

I think the problem I’m having with it is the narrator, who is a psychiatrist and sort of independent observer. He does raise some fascinating points and ideas but I’m feeling slightly distanced from the story and the emotion. From the reviews I’ve read however I suspect that may be about to change.

After a bit of a break I’m also back listening to audio books in the car again. Unsurprisingly I’m listening to the fourth book in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, Destined for an Early Grave. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve had a bit of a break but this is shaping up to be my favourite in the series so far.

Time After TimeIt’s been a slightly manic and emotional week at work, my boss left, my assistant got married and I had a run in with someone and spent the rest of the day crying in the toilets. Needless to say I haven’t managed to read as much or what I planned.

Thankfully I did manage to finish Time after Time by Hannah McKinnon which describes itself as a cross between sliding doors and groundhog day. The main character relives the same day over and over but with a different one of her ex boyfriends who could have been the one. Personally I kind of found the whole thing a bit boring but it seems to get loads of great reviews so it may just have been the mood I was in.

Cinder & EllaAs I was in need of a bit of cheering up after my horrible week (and Time after Time) I reverted to one of my favourite happy books Cinder & Ella by Kelly Oram. As you can probably guess from the title it’s a YA contemporary retelling of Cinderella. I’ve read a lot of retellings but this could actually be my all time favourite. There’s just something about it. It makes me cry, it makes me angry and most of all it makes me smile.

The next book started and finished over the weekend was The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa. It’s the second in the Iron Fey series which is about a 16 year old girl Meghan who discovers she has a magical connection. The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey, #2)I read the first book in this series a while ago and wasn’t too keen but having since read and loved the three books in the Talon series and The Immortal Rules I thought I’d give it another try. While this one is better than the first book it’s still nowhere near as good as the author’s more recent books. For various reasons I don’t like the main character and the plot is a little too obvious and contrived. I’d recommend you give this a pass and read Talon instead.

The final book finished this week was 3:46am by Nick Pirog. It’s the fifth book in the Henry Bins series which is about a man (Henry Bins) who suffers from a rare medical condition (Henry Bins) which means he’s only awake for 1 hour a day (from 3am to 4am). At around 120 pages, it’s safe to say it’s a quick read but it is a great read. The author has such a great imagination and a fantastic sense of humour.

Reading Next

As I’m writing this I’ve realised that this weeks reading next list is exactly the same as last weeks as I read absolutely nothing from it. I will definitely get back on track this week however with, Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, and Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet by Charlie M Holmberg which I received from NetGalley. This is of course assuming I don’t buy too many books in Amazon’s sale. I’ve already bought November 9 by Colleen Hoover and An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.

WWW Wednesday: 6th July 2016

The WWW Wednesdays meme is currently hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words and is a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned.

WWW Wednesday

To take part all you have to do is answer the following three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Here’s this weeks WWW.

Currently Reading

Time After TimeMy life has been slightly taken over by a team reading challenge on GoodReads at the moment so that seems to be determining what books I pick up more than anything else. I actually have two books on the go at the moment although I have to admit one is getting a little bit more of my attention than the other.

The one that’s probably getting more attention at the moment is Time after Time by Hannah McKinnon. It’s about a woman who’s feeling a bit fed up with life (work, her husband) and starts to wonder what life would be like if she’d stayed with one of her ex boyfriends and never met her husband. Then one day she gets to find out as she somehow ends up in a different reality where she ended up with a different man. I think I’m liking the concept of this book a little more than the execution. I do love a All is Not Forgottenwhat if / alternate reality type story but finding it a little on the slow side.

The second book I’m reading is All is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker which I requested from NetGalley after spotting it on someone else’s blog (sorry I can’t remember who’s). This is more of a memory loss (or to be more accurate removal) type book, another concept that I find fascinating. Very early days but I am very much enjoying the writing style.

Recently Finished

Slightly less books finished this week than last as I’m back at work and had a few evening events to attend.

Splintered (Splintered, #1)The first book finished was  Splintered by A.G. Howard which is based on Alice in Wonderland (it follows one of Alice’s descendants). I’d been looking out for this book for a while so was dead chuffed to find it on Overdrive. Reviews for this seem to be very polarized and whether you like it or hate it seems to come down to whether you find the way mental illness and it’s treatment is portrayed as offensive. In some ways it probably is (someone is locked in a padded cell in a straight-jacket and nurses wander around with syringes full of drugs in their pockets) but I think if you can get past that it’s quite an enjoyable read. Hopefully I’ll post a full review soon. Princess of the Midnight Ball (Princess, #1)

Second book, Princess of the Midnight Ball, was also a retelling, this time of the Grimms Twelve Dancing Princesses. Not a story I know particularly well although I’ve come across references to it in other retellings. I was a little bit disappointed in this as despite some very favourable reviews I kind of just found it ok. It’s almost instantly forgettable, none of the characters are that likeable and there’s a bit too much of the insta love going on for me.

One Hot SummerThe third and final book finished this week was One Hot Summer by Kat French. I bought this a few weeks ago as I absolutely love Kat (and her alter ego Kitty) and have been looking for an excuse to read it (instead of my many ARCs and library books) for a while. Kat does write fantastic chick lit with very swoon worthy men so I knew I’d enjoy it and I did.

Reading Next

As I’m midway through a challenge I actually have a fair idea what books I’m going to be reading over the next week or two. These include, Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent, Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet by Charlie M Holmberg and My Husband’s Wife by Jane Corry. Not sure what the order will be yet.

  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Here’s this weeks WWW.

Splintered (Splintered, #1)Currently Reading

As I’m sitting writing up this post I’m trying to decide which book I’m going to start as I literally just finished one a couple of hours ago. I think however I’m going to start Splintered by A.G. Howard. I’m in the mood for something quite light so I’m hoping an Alice in Wonderland type story will hit the right spot.

I do love re tellings but I’m not sure I’ve come across one about Alice before. The reviews are a little bit mixed as some reviewers seem to have taken offence at certain elements but I’m still looking forward to it.

Recently Finished

I’ve been very productive on the reading front this week as I finished six books and actually posted some reviews. Something I haven’t been very good aVanishing Girlst recently.

The first book finished was Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver which I was midway through last week. I’m a big fan of this author and absolutely loved Before I Fall but found this thriller about two sisters not that gripping. The writing is very good and I loved the way the author used different elements such as emails, newspaper articles and photographs to paint a picture of their lives and their relationship but I just found the whole thing a little too slow. You can read my full review here.

Midnight Alley (The Morganville Vampires, #3)After the Vanishing Girls I was in the mood for something a little bit easier so switched back to the Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine. I’d read the first two books in the series a couple of weeks ago so I decided to finish the box set I had and read books three and four, Midnight Alley and Feast for Fools over the weekend.

They are both enjoyable enough reads and they aren’t too long so you can get through them quite quickly. However, I’m starting to feel like there’s not enough happening and not much is moving on. I’m also finding it a little annoying that the author leaves a cliffhanger at the end of every book so I think I’m going to put the series on hold for a while. The Girl with All the Gifts

The next book, and my absolute favourite read of the week was The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey. It’s a book that’s been sitting on my want to read pile for a while so when I spied it in the library I couldn’t resist. I hadn’t actually realised it was a book about zombies till I mentioned I was thinking about reading it to someone. It definitely has all of the classic and wonderful zombie story elements (think Walking Dead) but is so incredibly well thought out and developed I can’t recommend enough. Again, I’ve actually written a review which you can read here.Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Also this week I finally got around to reading another book that’s been hovering around my TBR for a while, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Abertalli. I had heard a lot of great things about this and saw a lot of five star reviews so had high hopes. As it turned out I think I’d built it up too much and there was no way it could possibly live up to it. It’s an enjoyable read and I would recommend it but I think there are better YA M/M romances out there.

The sixth and final book of the week was Every Exquisite Thing Every Exquisite Thingby Matthew Quick which I received from NetGalley. Matthew Quick for those who like me didn’t know wrote the Silver Linings Playbook and like Silver Linings Playbook this story is about misfits and non conformists but is aimed at the YA market.

I hadn’t read anything by this author before and initially I have to admit to going “hmm, this is a bit weird” but after a few pages I discovered it’s weird in that really, really good way. It’s a story about a girl Nanette who’s in that period in the run up to graduation from high school and is feeling a bit lost. Her teacher gives her a book by a little known author which she becomes obsessed with (sound familiar) and which inspires her to make some changes and set off down a different path. There was something about this story that I liked a lot but that I struggle to put into words. Hopefully I’ll figure it out once I write the review.

Reading Next

Miracle of miracles I actually read all of the books on last weeks reading next list which leaves me with a bit of a hole to fill. I have got a lot of books that have been on my kindle or shelves for a while but I tend to be drawn to the shiny and new so will no doubt read one of the books I picked up during the week. These include, Hanover House by Brenda Novak, Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, Wicked by Jennifer L Armentrout and The Fire Child by S.K. Tremaine.
