Palm Beach, FinlandThe Wicked King (The Folk of the Air, #2)BecomingThe Dying Game

I still seem to be juggling multiple books this week but at long last I do seem to be making some progress with them, well some of them. I’m loaded with the cold (again), and Film4 has been showing Studio Ghibli classics (I have to admit that’s been more appealing than reading) but work has been a little quieter so I’ve been managing to spend a bit more time reading.

I just started Palm Beach Finland on Monday but am already about a third of the way through and loving it. It’s a little bit dark but really funny and with some slightly out there characters. I also just started The Wicked King by Holly Black on Sunday and despite only reading it in the house (it’s a big hardback) I’m pretty close to finishing it. I love how morally grey it all is and the way Black portrays Faerie but have to admit I think I preferred Cruel Prince. It’s possibly just the way I’m feeling at the moment though.

Very little progress on Becoming as I’ve kind of pushed it to the back burner. I don’t really read non fiction and almost never read autobiographies or memoirs so I’ve just been finding it hard to get into. I’ve also been struggling with The Dying Game which I’m listening to on audio. I’m finding it difficult to follow what’s going on so may need to switch to the book at some point. I did like the sound of it but it’s just confusing me at the moment.

The Hundred Lies of Lizzie LovettOne Summer In Paris

Two books finished again this week, The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett and One Summer in Paris, both of which were pretty good but very different stories. My views on The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett were a little bit mixed but this was mostly due to feeling misled by the blurb. I was expecting it to be a thriller around the disappearance of Lizzie Lovett but while there is a bit of mystery about her disappearance the story focuses on main character Hawthorn whose theory on what happened and actions were so out there I spent most of my time worrying about her mental health. The writing is good and it was definitely unique but possibly a little too bizarre unique.

One Summer in Paris seems to be a continuation of Sarah Morgan’s move from romances to more contemporary fiction and focuses mostly on family relationships and friendship. I do kind of miss the hot and steamy romance thing but I did enjoy this. It was great to have two very different povs, a middle aged mother whose marriage has just broken down and a teenager escaping a difficult home life, and I loved the friendship that formed between them. I always find Morgan’s writing makes me emotional (and this was no exception) and I loved the Paris setting.

I’ve got a few days planned off work next week so I’m hoping I’ll finally be free of the lurgy and able to get some proper reading done. I have a couple of bookish events fast approaching, I’m going to the Orenda roadshow on Monday and seeing Angie Thomas a week on Saturday, so I’m hoping to squeeze in some books by those authors. I also still have a stack of library books I need to read before they’re due back

Twisted

I seem to be juggling two thrillers at the moment which is never a good idea, even if they’re both great reads. I struggle to read more than one book at a time (unless one is an audio) and it’s particularly bad when they’re similar genres. The first,  Twisted by Steve Cavanagh is one I was very happy to receive from the publisher via NetGalley. I’ve been hearing lots of great things about Cavanagh and have been wanting to read something by him for a while and so far this is living up to expectations. It’s definitely twisted and I have no idea where the story is going to go.

The second book I’m reading at the moment is Close to the Edge by Toby Faber. This is an early copy I received from the publisher’s publicist so I’m afraid I couldn’t track down a cover. I’m reading the pdf version on my phone which isn’t the easiest (I keep losing my place) but liking it a lot. I don’t think it’ll take me long to finish it.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1)In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children, #4)A Week to Be Wicked (Spindle Cove, #2)

It’s been another week of pretty light reading for me as I’ve been trying to read my way out of a slump. Despite going right off Tessa Dare last week with A Night to Surrender the first book I finished was actually another of hers, A Week to be Wicked, and I absolutely loved it. It’s so light, funny and quirky it had me laughing out loud and unable to stop reading. If you like historical romances I highly recommend.

Next book finished was another romance but this time of the YA contemporary variety. I’d previously watched the film of  To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before but despite the book being on my kindle for years this was the first chance I’d gotten to read it. I suspect I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t seen the film but it was an easy enough read and Lara Jean and Peter do make for a very cute couple (fake or not)

Final book this week was In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire which I listened to on audio. I love her writing but I’m afraid this was one of the weaker ones in the Wayward Children series for me. It could just have been my mood but I never felt particularly invested in any of the characters and I really wanted a bit more of the humour the previous book had.

I seem to have a heck of a lot of library books on loan at the moment and quite a few reservations I’m expecting to come in in the next couple of weeks so I feel like I should maybe switch to them. Up next I think will be the Binding, Palm Beach Finland and probably Circle of Shadows (don’t you just love those covers).

Currently ReadingTo All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1)

I just finished a book last night so I’m currently trying to decide what to read next. I have signed myself up for a group read of  To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han so I’m kind of tempted to just start it a little early. This is one of those books I’ve had and been meaning to read for ages and never got around to. I have watched the movie and really enjoyed it so I have high hopes for a cute and funny read which is just what I’m in the mood for right now. There is of course a danger that if I read this I’ll end up having to read the whole trilogy though.

In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children, #4)

On audio I lost my hold on Mythos by Stephen Fry and given there were 55 people waiting it seems like it may be some time before I get it back. On the plus side this does mean I have some time to listen to In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire. I have been loving her Wayward Children series so I’ve been looking forward to this one for ages. They’re quite short so I’m already half way through and while I don’t think it’s gonna be my new favourite in the series it’s a great listen.

I’m still struggling to concentrate on anything for any length of time and just don’t know what book to pick up so my reading has been a tad eclectic over the last week.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave (Charley Davidson, #9)We Should All Be FeministsA Cat, a Man, and Two WomenA Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1)

I did manage to read Dirt on the Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones, the ninth book in the Charley Davidson series so I’m getting closer to being able to read the galley of the thirteenth and final book. I did have some initial doubts about this installment (I’m fairly certain the accepted treatment for amnesia is not leaving them as a Jane Doe and pretending you don’t know them) but I did like that this was a more straightforward story than the last couple have been. It was nice to take a step back from the whole saving humanity from the forces of evil thing.

I also managed to make a start on my reading around the world challenge with A Cat, A Man and Two Women. It is a short read but there are some great characters, and a wonderful depiction of the relationships between them and Japanese culture in general (plus there’s a cat being a typical cat). Not entirely sure it counts but I also read essay We Should All Be Feminists by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which was a really great take on what being a feminist means. I’ve also picked up a short story collection by the author so that will no doubt be up soon.

Reading an essay on feminism then reading a historical romance was probably not the best idea but yeah that’s kinda what I did. I usually love Tessa Dare but A Night to Surrender really didn’t do it for me. There were far too many instances of Bram forcing himself on Susanna and her initially keeping quiet so as not to be ruined before succumbing to the desire she didn’t realize she had for him (hmm). It had some good moments but I’m afraid this is probably my least favourite book by Dare so far.

Work’s still busy and I’m feeling like I’m in a bit of a reading slump so I’m not entirely sure what I’ll pick up next. I keep doing that thing where I pick something up read a few pages then put it down because I’m not in the mood. I may try and continue on with Charley Davidson, they do seem to be the only books that hold my attention right now or I may go pick something off my NetGalley shelf. I am looking for some books for challenges too so if anyone has any recommendations for books with yellow covers or that are set in the southern hemisphere (but not in Australia or New Zealand) let me know.

Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient GreeceYet again I’m not really reading anything right this very moment. I just finished a book on Monday night and have been feeling too tired to start anything new.

I am still listening to Mythos by Stephen Fry on audio and making some not bad progress despite not doing much driving which is when I do most of my listening. So far I’m really enjoying it. There have been a few parts which seemed almost like lists, who was descended from who, what they are known for, which words are derived from their name, but there are some great stories in there too.

My focus over the last week or so has been on finishing writing up some reviews to try and clear off my NetGalley shelf so I’ve been mostly re reading over the last week rather than starting anything new. I have this terrible habit of finishing a book and instead of writing up a review (or at least the notes for one) I pick up my next book. It’s great at the time but not so good four months later when you finally get around to writing said review and have to resort to reading the blurb to remember what it was about.

Rather than reading blurbs I decided this time to skim through the books and ended up just reading them. It was The Kiss Quotient and The Other Miss Bridgerton both of which are fantastic (and very addictive) so I was more than happy to read them again (and the reviews are now drafted).

The Kiss Quotient (The Kiss Quotient #1)The Other Miss Bridgerton (Rokesbys, #3)The Enchanted Sonata

I did pick up one new book this week, The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork, but unfortunately it was a little bit of a disappointment. I loved the concept of it (a retelling of the Nutcracker with some Pied Piper thrown in) and there are some magical moments but the writing was a little clunky. It’s not terrible, it just didn’t live up to expectations.

As is the norm for me in January and February I’m working crazy hours so not sure I want to start any of the books I’ve been overly excited about until I can properly enjoy them. I do have some library books that should be easy and enjoyable reads so I think I’m going to focus on them for a bit.

Next up I suspect will be book 9 in the Charley Davidson series which I picked up last week, hopefully that’ll get me closer to reading that ARC of book 13.  My hold on the fourth Wayward Children book In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire also came in so I don’t think I’m going to be able to resist for long. And speaking of things I can’t resist I don’t think I’ll be able to wait much longer to read 99 Percent Mine.

Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient GreeceUmmm… I’m kind of between books at the moment. I finished one at the weekend and between work and not feeling particularly great I haven’t started anything new yet.

On audio, I lost my hold on the Diviners by Libba Bray yet again (I still have 10 hours to go) but I’m kind of ok with that as the hold I’d placed ages ago on Mythos by Stephen Fry came in. Stephen Fry also narrates which is a bonus as he really is a wonderful narrator. I’m only a couple of hours in (creation of the earth) but finding it absolutely fascinating. I knew bits and pieces of the myths but nothing like the detail and depth in this. Myths have always been something I’ve loved so have high hopes for this.

Slayer (Slayer, #1)

It’s been a bit of an odd reading week for me, work has gone crazy as it always tends to in January, so I’ve been finding it difficult to focus on any one book and have had days where I’m just too tired to read anything. I did however manage to finish a couple of books, the first of which was Slayer by Kiersten White, which I’d received from NetGalley.

I am the biggest Buffy fan so I was very excited to get my hands on a new book by White set in the Buffyverse and it’s really great. It took a little while to get going, there’s a lot of backstory to get through in the beginning, but once it got past that I very much enjoyed it. It’s a little light on feels and the story is a little predictable but it’s got a similar feel to the show and a lot of the same humour. It is the first in a series so I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the next one.A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Second book finished was actually a re read of A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. I got this from NetGalley way back in August last year and couldn’t resist reading immediately. I did not however review it so when I realised it was due out and I needed to get my review written I thought I should have a quick skim through to refresh my memory… and a quick skim through turned into a full re read. It just sucked me in yet again. Harper is such a wonderful main character you can’t help but get behind her and I loved how unique the author made a story that’s been told hundreds of times before. If you like retellings I highly recommend.

Pretty safe to say my reading plans went out the window when my NetGalley request for Slayer by Kiersten White was approved. I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer so I’ve been really looking forward to this book and while it’s still relatively early days it is not disappointing. There’s a lot of the same humor the show has and I’m loving all of the references to the characters I love, although so far none have actually appeared yet 😦

On audio, I’m still working my way through The Diviners by Libba Bray. I did manage to make some decent progress at the weekend while I was out digging up the garden (I’m starting a veg garden in preparation for the Brexit food shortages … no not really). Not convinced though I’m going to get it finished before it returns itself to the library this weekend.

Fallen Angel

I’ve had a great reading week with three books finished and all of them pretty great albeit very different. The first book finished was Fallen Angel by Chris Brookmyre which I’d received from NetGalley. I’ve been a big fan of Brookmyre for a long time so I was very excited about a new standalone contemporary thriller from him (he’s been venturing into some unusual territory with his last few books) and it proved to be a great read. Conspiracy theories, narcissistic personalities and family secrets (pretty much all of my fave things) play a big part of this story and there are some wonderfully well developed, and horrid, characters to enjoy. A little too early for a full review but yep, I’d recommend.

Eighth Grave After Dark (Charley Davidson, #8)

Next up was Eighth Grave After Dark by Darynda Jones, the eighth book in the Charley Davidson series. I am completely addicted to this series about a private investigator who’s also the grim reaper. I have to admit however that while I did enjoy it I do think this is the weakest book in the series so far. There were some big events and reveals but I felt like not very much happened. There were also a couple of little inconsistencies and actions that didn’t really make sense and some foreshadowing of what’s to come that’s rather concerning. It did still make me laugh and I love the characters so will read on but keeping everything crossed what I think is coming won’t actually happen.

I Owe You One

Third and final book finished was I Owe You One by another long time fave author Sophie Kinsella. It feels like forever since I managed to read a book by Kinsella so it was really nice to sink into one again, and yeah I really disappeared into this one. I started it early afternoon on Saturday and read the whole thing in pretty much one go (I did break for food occasionally). I should hopefully have review up this week but if you’ve read Kinsella’s other books, think Got Your Number. It’s not quite as funny but has the same kind of characters and chemistry.

Reading Next

I probably need to slow down a little on my reading to catch up with some reviews but if I get the chance I would like to pick up Twisted by Steve Cavanagh, I did read the first few pages on Friday but then Slayer came in so it got kind of bumped down the list a bit. I may also attempt to pick up one of my older galleys. I’m thinking possibly The Trouble with Emma by Katie Oliver which has been on my shelf for almost three years.

Not sure why but I seem to be in the mood for crime and thriller books at the moment so when my request for Chris Brookmyre’s latest novel Fallen Angel was approved on NetGalley I couldn’t resist jumping straight in. I’m currently around a third of the way through and very much enjoying it.

On audio, my hold on The Diviners finally came in so I’ve started listening to it again. It’s been a couple of months since I last listened to it so I ended up jumping back a little to remind myself what was happening but starting to make some progress again. I really must make an effort to spend more time listening to it before it returns itself again.

I haven’t done a WWW post since before Christmas so I’ve included pretty much everything I’ve read since mid December. Have to admit I wasn’t in the mood for anything too serious over the holiday period (I was ill, my central heating packed in and it was the holidays) so there’s an abnormally large number of books with shirtless men on the cover on my list but I needed something to heat me up 😉 And they fit some challenges I was doing.

The Christmas Sisters: The perfect feel-good and romantic read to curl up with this winter! An English Bride In Scotland (Highland Brides, #1)Sixth Grave on the Edge (Charley Davidson, #6)Seventh Grave and No Body (Charley Davidson, #7)

  • The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan (4 stars) – This was more family drama than romance but it was a really enjoyable and emotional read. You can read my full review here.
  • An English Bride in Scotland by Lyndsay Sands (3 stars) – The first book by Sands I’ve managed to finish and it was a pretty good read, although given I’m struggling to remember what happened in the story, it must not be an especially memorable one.
  • Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones (4 stars) – There seemed to be a lot of different stories mixed together this time around rather than one big mystery to be solved but the romance, which has been my main niggle in this series, is much improved.
  • Seventh Grave & No Body by Darynda Jones (4.5 stars) – Think this may be my fave in the series so far. Loving how the characters are developing and while the focus is more on the grim reaper side than the PI again it feels a bit more cohesive.

Captive (Lace Underground, #1)RoomiesA Place in the Sun

  • Captive by Tess Oliver (3 stars) – A very problematic storyline but an incredibly addictive read. This is one of those stories I feel like I shouldn’t have enjoyed (but I kinda did). Not sure I’ll be continuing on with the trilogy though.
  • Roomies by Christina Lauren (4 stars) – I love the whole fake relationship that might be real trope so I was always going to love this story and it’s especially good as it’s set in a theatre
  • A Place in the Sun by R.S. Grey (3.5 stars) – I didn’t realise when I started this it was kind of a sequel to the first Summer Games book but it can easily be read as a standalone. Like all of Grey’s books it’s an enjoyable and quick read. Didn’t feel much of a spark in the romance but the Italian setting was wonderful.

The Glass WomanVerityCold-Hearted Rake (The Ravenels, #1)

  • The Glass Woman by Caroline Lea (???) – My review will probably be going up next week (if I manage to write it up) so I’m not rating just yet. It is however a wonderfully atmospheric read and one I definitely recommend if you like historical mysteries with a little bit of witchcraft and superstition in the mix.
  • Verity by Colleen Hoover (3.5 stars) – Something a bit different from CoHo and while I do love her writing and found this an engaging story it didn’t really wow me. I kind of wish she’d pushed things a little further or put a real twist into this mystery.
  • Cold Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas (3 stars) – I think I’ve been reading too many historical romances as they’re all starting to get a bit samey. This is still an enjoyable read (and I read it in one sitting) but nothing really stood out about it and I found myself more interested in the secondary characters than the leads.

I foolishly decided it was a good idea to grab the thirteenth and final book in the Charley Davidson series from NetGalley (it was Read Now) despite only having read the first seven so I think I’m going to try and read book eight next (they’re addictive and easy reads so it’s not exactly a hardship). After that I’m kind of tempted to return to my reading life of crime with Steve Cavanagh’s new book Twisted before jumping into a new romance from Sophie Kinsella 🙂

I do love Sarah Morgan’s writing, it’s just so easy to sink into, so I’ve only been reading since Monday and am already well past the halfway mark. It is a little more family drama than romance (I love Morgan’s romances) so it’s probably not going to be my favourite book from her but it’s an enjoyable story.

The Devil Aspect

Only one book finished this week but The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell was a good one. It’s a horror story set in Czechoslovakia in 1935 and is told from two point of views. The first is a young psychiatrist Viktor who has a new job treating six of the country’s most feared serial killers. The second is a detective based in Prague who is on the hunt for a new serial killer known as Leather Apron. I found it quite a slow read (hence only one book finished) as there’s a lot of detail and history (something I always struggle with) but I did like the mystery and investigation. It’s not out till March so I do unfortunately need to hold off on a review but if you’re a fan of Silence of the Lamb type stories I think you’ll enjoy.

It’s a horror/mystery set in Czechoslovakia in the 1935s and has a real gothic feel to it. I’m only around a quarter of the way through but so far I’m really enjoying it (if you can enjoy a gory horror story set in an asylum – I can).

The Lost Man

Two books finished this week, the first of which was The Lost Man by Jane Harper. Harper is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors and I very much enjoyed this new standalone set in the Australian Outback. It’s a combination of family drama and mystery, with main character Nathan trying to figure out how his brother ended up dead in the middle of nowhere. It’s not a particularly fast paced plot but the author does a great job in setting the scene and there are some very intriguing characters. I found it very difficult to put down.

Second book finished was Hotshot Doc by R.S. Grey. I spied this was available on Kindle Unlimited and couldn’t really resist as I almost always enjoy Grey’s books. This is an enjoyable enough read but while I pretty much read the whole thing in one sitting I’m not sure it’ll be a particularly memorable one.

Currently ReadingThe Lost Man

Another week and another new book started on a Monday 🙂 This week I’m reading The Lost Man by Jane Harper, a copy of which I received from the publisher via NetGalley. I’m getting the bathroom in my house replaced this week so I haven’t had a huge amount of reading time but so far so good. I’m a big fan of Jane Harper, I loved The Dry and Force of Nature, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what she does with a different cast of characters.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Despite the fact that I really should be unpacking some more boxes and wotnot I have to confess I went on a bit of a reading binge over the weekend and consequently finished three books. The first of these was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and seriously, this book blew me away. I did find it a little bit slow in the beginning but by the end I was a big blubbering wreck. I suspect a lot of people probably won’t like Evelyn as a character much, she’s pretty selfish, ruthless and willing to do whatever, but I liked her a lot. Yes she does some not very nice things but she stands by her actions and refuses to regret them.

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4)After such an emotional rollercoaster I needed something much lighter and funnier so switched back to the the Charley Davidson series and the fourth book Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet which I’d grabbed from the library. I am absolutely loving this series about a private investigator/police consultant/grim reaper. It’s a little bit silly but it’s fun and I love how the characters do develop over the course of it. I loved it so much that I also ended up reading book five, Fifth Grave Past the Light on Sunday. Thankfully I haven’t as yet managed to get my hands on books six and seven or I wouldn’t have been able to stop. It’s possible I may have an addiction.

Reading Next

Next up I think I’m going to finally pick up The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan. Other than singing along with some of the songs on the radio I have been really struggling to get into the festive spirit so hopefully this will give me the kick I need. I’d also really like to pick up either The Beauty of the Wolf (a Beauty and the Beast retelling) or The Enchanted Sonata (a Nutcracker retelling). Both seem like they’d be perfect for the season – and they’re sitting on my NetGalley shelf.
