Currently Reading

I’m sticking with lighter reads at the moment as work is still pretty busy so I’m currently reading One in a Million by Lindsay Kelk. I’m taking part in a couple of reading challenges at the moment, Popsugar and a team challenge on Goodreads, so this quite conveniently works for both. It’s a My Fair Lady retelling with main character Annie Higgins taking on the challenge of making a stranger Instagram famous in 30 days. It’s pretty early days for me but so far so good.

On audio I’ve decided to pick up Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray again. I put it on pause last week so I could listen to an audio from the library that was due back. This is the third book in the Diviners series and I’m very much enjoying it. So much so I have book 4 sitting waiting on me.

Recently Finished

Three books finished again this week, the first of which Deep Down Dead by Steph Broadribb was a bit of a surprise. Not sure what I was expecting, it’s about a bounty hunter tasked with bringing in an ex, but I really enjoyed it. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book like this and I have been seriously tempted to just go on a binge read of the rest of the series.

I also finished the audiobook of Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire and liked it a lot. It’s still not my favourite in the Wayward Children series but I do love the characters and can’t wait to see what’s next for them.

Final book finished this week was To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters, which I received an advance copy of from NetGalley. I was in a historical romance kind of mood and this fit the bill perfectly. It’s a little bit silly and kind of ridiculous at times but a whole lot of fun and I read the whole thing cover to cover on Saturday morning.

It’s not that long till the Orenda Roadshow (it’s on the 24th February) so I’d really like to read a few books by the authors appearing before then. I have loads sitting on my TBR but I’m thinking I’ll probably go for some or all of the following

Currently Reading

Things are still busy at work (hopefully only another week or so to go) so I’m sticking with slightly lighter reads and currently reading Deep Down Dead by Steph Broadribb. I have tickets for the Orenda roadshow at the end of the month and thought I should probably try and read some of the books by the authors Orenda publish. It was only after I started reading this and got quite into the story that I realized Steph Broadribb wasn’t on the tour… oops. I am however absolutely loving this story of a single mom/bounty hunter so it’s all good. It’s been an age since I read this kind of story and I’d forgotten how much I enjoy them.

On audio I’ve had to put Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray on hold for the moment as my library hold on Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire came in so I had to bump it to the top of the list. I probably would have done this anyway as I absolutely love the Wayward Children series. It’s a really short book, around 4 hours, so I’m making great progress with it. Only around 1 hr 30 mins to go.

Recently Finished

I’ve managed to sneak in quite a bit of reading over the last week, the weather’s been bad, so I managed to finish three books. The first of these was a NetGalley ARC of Dark Waters by G.R. Halliday. This is the second in the DI Monica Kennedy series and I would say it’s better than the first. It’s just as dark and creepy, but a lot of the things that were irritating me in the first book seem to have been sorted out and it feels like we’re getting some real character development.

Second book finished this week was American Royals by Katharine McGee. I also received this from NetGalley but just never seemed to be in the mood to read it. I very much enjoyed her other series The Thousandth Floor, a futuristic sci fi teen drama, and this was a lot of fun too. While it’s an alternate history type story rather than a sci fi there are definitely a lot of similarities between the two series and it reads like an American soap opera with all of the clichés and relationship drama. If you don’t take it too seriously and accept it as it is it’s fantastic.

The final book finished this week was Jeaniene Frost’s latest Wicked Bite. Frost is my go to author when I’m in the mood for a paranormal romance and this book doesn’t disappoint. Not my absolute favourite of her books but it’s enjoyable and main character Ian is growing on me.

Reading Next

I know I had it on my reading next list last week and didn’t read it next but I’m keeping The Switch by Beth O’Leary close to the top of the pile for the moment. It’s one I’ve been really looking forward to so I don’t want to read it when I’m tired and stressed. I have a lot of books on my NetGalley shelf at the moment so I think I’m going to try and make a bit of progress with that. Yes No Maybe So and Wranglestone are both out this week so I should really be picking them up.

Currently Reading

I’m back… well kind of. I’m still working long hours at the moment so haven’t had much time to read but I have actually been reading which is an improvement on last week when I think I had a touch of eye strain. But, I’ve switched to my ancient kindle and have been managing to read without the headaches, dizziness and floating black dots.

At the moment I’m working my way through Dark Waters by G.R. Halliday, which I stumbled across on NetGalley and couldn’t resist. It’s the second in the Monica Kennedy series and is a police procedural/murder mystery set in the Highlands of Scotland. I’m around two thirds of the way through as I write this and very much enjoying. It’s definitely stronger than the first book and I think even darker and creepier.

Speaking of dark and creepy, on audio I’m still listening to Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray, the third book in the Diviners series. I have to confess I haven’t made a huge amount of progress in the last week which means the gang are still stuck in an asylum with darkness and some not so happy ghosts moving in 😮

Recently Finished

Only one book finished again this week, The New Guy by Kathryn Freeman. The publisher very kindly sent me a widget for an advance copy of this and as I’d been considering requesting it anyway I couldn’t resist despite a heaving NetGalley shelf. This turned out to be a very wise decision as I ended up kind of loving it. It’s a romcom about a man and woman who meet in a bar and have a “one night stand” only to discover the following day that he’s the new guy they’ve hired to work in the company she owns.

I wasn’t sure about this at the start as the male lead Ryan does not come across as a particularly likeable guy but he definitely grows on you as you get to know him. I loved the role reversal, with the woman in the position of power and the guy the insecure mess. It’s funny and sweet and there’s plenty of chemistry between the leads so overall a very enjoyable and addictive read.

Reading Next

The publishers actually granted my wish on NetGalley for a copy of Beth O’Leary’s new book The Switch so I suspect that will be moving to the top of my list. It’s one of my most anticipated books of the year so won’t be able to resist for long. My library hold on the audiobook of Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire also came in during the week so will be picking it up soon.

Currently Reading

I’ve been working long hours over the last week and as I sit at a computer all day I’m finding my eyes are really struggling. I’ve therefore decided to try and take a bit of a break from reading to give them a rest. We’ll see how long that lasts… I’m writing this on Sunday so chances are I’ll already have caved and picked something up by Wednesday 😉

On audio I’m listening to Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray, the third book in the Diviners series. I went for a long walk on Saturday so that gave me the chance to listen to it for a big long stretch. I think I’m around the halfway point now.

Recently Finished

As I’ve had to take a bit of a break from reading I’ve only managed to finish one book this week, My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things (and a few not so good things) about this for a while so it was one I couldn’t resist and yep I liked it a lot. The writing style is a little unusual, lots of short choppy chapters and it seems to jump from one scene to the next, but that really worked for me. I liked the main character Korede a lot and found her pretty relatable. Not sure I would help a sibling dispose of a body or cover up a murder but it does make for a unique and engaging story. My only gripe is the ending… I am not happy with that.

Currently Reading

I’m having some trouble deciding on my next read so have been rereading bits of my fave books until I do.

On audio I’m still making steady progress on Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray, Think I listened to a good three or four hours. I do still have quite a way to go though and with the fourth book sitting waiting on my kindle I do feel like I need to get a shift on.

Recently Finished

Last week was my first week back at work after the Christmas break and wow, that was a shock to the system. I did however manage to finish three books, all from my backlist, the first of which was Shades of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost. I do love Jeaniene Frost’s books and her writing but I am a little on the fence about this new spinoff series. Main character Ian has never really been my favourite in the other books and it really took a while for me to warm up to him in this. It does have an absolutely stunning ending and I’m totally going to read on but I miss my Vlad.

Despite saying last week that I would have zero concentration for books and would probably be best sticking to romcoms I did for some reason decide to read This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. It’s been sitting on my TBR for a while and I was very much looking forward to it but it was definitely not the right time to read it. It is a wonderful book, original, unique and if you can give it your full attention incredibly engaging and beautiful. But, as someone who was tired, stressed and whose brain was all over the place this was a difficult read. The language is flowery and if I’m honest difficult for me (I had to look up a few words) and the concept not the easiest to get your head around particularly as there’s little explanation and you have to just pick it up as you go. I did like it but I think I’m going to have to read it again at some point in the future when I can give it the attention it deserves.

As you can probably imagine after that book I needed something much, much easier so went for The Bromance Bookclub by Lyssa Kay Adams and boy this book was everything I needed. Funny, cute and very, very sweet. I loved the whole idea of this group of successful men reading regency romances to sort out the problems with the women in their lives.

I made the mistake of going to a bookstore on Saturday where I noticed that quite a few of the books sitting on my NetGalley shelf are actually out in the world already. I feel like I need to maybe make some progress with my ARCs over the next couple of weeks. I’m therefore hoping to pick up the following:-

Currently Reading

I got a little bit swept up with the whole Dracula thing at the end of last week, the new BBC adaptation was fantastic, so decided I really had to find a vampire book to read. And, when I think vampire book I think Jeaniene Frost (her Night Huntress and Night Prince series’ are a lot of fun). It therefore seemed a good time to start her latest book Shades of Wicked. It’s set in the same world as the other series’ and there’s quite a bit of character overlap so I am loving it. The main character Ian isn’t necessarily the easiest to like but I’m definitely warming up to him 😉

After some swithering I decided to start the third book in the Diviners series,  Before the Devil Breaks You, on audio and I think this was the right decision as I’m very much enjoying it. I’m loving that all of the main characters have come together even if they do all have their own stories going on. My only gripe is how light Evie and Sam’s roles have been so far as they are my favourite characters.

Recently Finished

I’ve been playing catch up with my blog posts over the last week which has kind of eaten into my reading time but I have managed to finish two books. The first Bitter Falls by Rachel Caine was one of my most anticipated reads. I’m a big fan of Caine’s writing and have been loving the Stillhouse Lake series. However while this started well I felt like it lost it’s way around the middle and started to fall into the same routine as the previous books in the series. I’ll no doubt still read book 5 when it comes out but I’m hoping Caine will change things up.

The second book finished was new adult romance Just a Boyfriend by Sariah Wilson. Wilson is a new discovery for me and I’ve been really enjoying her writing. I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re original or that they particularly wow me but I do find them addictive reading and a great way to spend a lazy afternoon reading. This one is a sort of stepbrother romance, I say sort of because technically the couple at the center of the story were together before their parents even met. There are a few deeper themes running through the story, cancer, drug use and depression but overall it’s an easy read.

Work is going to be hellish over the next two to three weeks, January is always bad, so it’s likely I’ll be reading mostly romcoms as I doubt I’ll have a lot of focus. I’m leaning towards the following:-

Currently Reading

Happy new year everyone!!! I can’t believe we’re in 2020 already, where does the time go? For my first book of the year I’ve decided to pick up Bitter Falls by Rachel Caine, the fourth book in the Stillhouse Lake series. I love Rachel Caine’s writing and this series is definitely a favourite. I’m only around 20% in as I write this and it’s off to a strong start, fingers crossed it manages to keep it up.

I’ve just finished my audio book and am still trying to make my mind up on what to listen to next so I’ve had the second Cat and Bones book, One Foot in the Grave,  on the go for the last few days. I’ve listened to it before but it always makes me laugh so it’s keeping me going till I make a decision.

Recently Finished

I decided to take a bit of a break from blogging last week (I’m off work for the hols so wanted a break from computer screens) and missed WWW Wednesday so this is two weeks worth of reading. I’ve actually had a great couple of weeks and I think the break may be doing me good as I feel like I’m starting to find the love again. Anyway over the two weeks I finished six books:-

• The Honey-Don’t List by Christina Lauren – I liked this a lot and pretty much flew through it in a few days. It’s not especially memorable though so while I enjoyed it at the time it didn’t wow me
• Strangers by C.L. Taylor – This is one that did wow me and I highly recommend trying to get your hands on a copy if you can (I got it from NetGalley). It had me hooked from pretty much the first page and it kept me guessing until the end. Loved it.
• Girl at Heart by Kelly Oram – I love Kelly Oram and honestly can’t understand why she’s not more popular than she is. This YA contemporary isn’t my favourite from her (let’s face it nothing’s gonna beat Cinder & Ella) but it’s very good. Yes some of the characters are too good to be true but it made me cry (Oram’s books always make me cry) so I was clearly invested.
• Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray – Whoop!!! It’s taken months but I’ve finally finished it. I do love this series but this book was much longer than it needed to be. There are wonderful characters and I love the way they’re developing but the story could have been a lot tighter. There seems to be an awful lot of social commentary and setting things up for future books.
• Finale by Stephanie Garber – At last, I managed to read the final book in the Caraval trilogy and it was fantastic. I love the world and the magic, I love Tella as a character and I loved the romance. I did however feel that the ending was a little rushed and I kind of missed the game aspect of the first two books.
• #Awestruck by Sariah Wilson – I have no idea why I decided to read this, it was a slightly random KU pick, but I really enjoyed it. I literally stayed up till 1am so I could finish it so clearly something about it worked for me. I think I’m just in a bit of a romance mood at the moment as I’ve already downloaded a couple of the author’s other books and plan on binge reading them.

I did also attempt to read the final Throne of Glass book, Kingdom of Ash, but I’m afraid I gave up on it pretty quickly. I think I’ve left it too long as I couldn’t remember who half the characters were and was very confused about what was going on. It’s unlikely I’m gonna go back and reread the previous books so unless I can find a recap somewhere I’m not sure I’m ever going to finish this series.

Reading Next

I snagged a copy of Starsight by Brandon Sanderson in the sales last week so I think I’m probably going to pick it up next as I’ve been eagerly awaiting it ever since I finished the first book Skyward. I also have an ARC of Holly Bourne’s new adult book Pretending which has been calling to me from my kindle. I’m also planning to start either Before the Devil Breaks You or Gemina as my next audio.

Currently Reading

It’s all change this week as I finished all of the books I was reading last week. On ebook I decided to pick up  The Honey-Don’t List by Christina Lauren, an ARC of which I received via NetGalley. I’ve enjoyed pretty much every Christina Lauren book I’ve read so far so couldn’t resist starting it almost as soon as it arrived on my kindle. It’s very early days, I only started it on Monday night, but so far I’m liking it. It’s reminding me a lot of The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, no bad thing as I absolutely love that book.

On audio I’ve resumed listening to Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray, I started this a few months ago but put it on hold so I could listen to Darkdawn which I’d borrowed from the library. I was already quite far through when I took a break so I only have around 7 hours to go. It is starting to feel like I’ve been working my way through it for ages though so I think I’m going to make an effort to finish it in the next week.

Recently Finished

I’ve had a pretty great reading week and managed to finish three books, two I loved, one not so much. The first one finished was The Christmas Wish List by Heidi Swain, a book I’d borrowed from the library based pretty much on the cover. I really wanted to like this book but I’m afraid it didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s my general grumpiness at the moment but I couldn’t find any empathy for the characters. It was all a little too predictable and on the twee side for me.

I suspect it wasn’t particularly helped by my listening to Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff at the same time. I don’t think I could have found a book more different if I tried and The Christmas Wish List just couldn’t compare to the power and emotion in Darkdawn. I absolutely loved it. There are so many twists and turns and so much happening. It is the final book in the trilogy so there are some heavy losses (I was not happy about a few of these) and an absolutely epic ending. I don’t re read books very often but I suspect this will be one I’ll read again.

After the trauma of Darkdawn, something a little lighter (and a lot less violent) was needed so I decided to pick up my ARC of If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane. I’m a big fan of McFarlane so was very excited when my NetGalley request for this one was approved. It’s a fake relationship story, one of my favourite romance tropes, and McFarlane does a wonderful job of making it feel very contemporary and relevant. The characters are likeable (and have chemistry) and there’s a bit of a feminist slant to it which is fantastic to see. I’m hoping to have a full review up soon.

Reading Next

I have only 3 days of work before I finish up for the Christmas break and I’m hoping that with a little more time in the house I can pick up a few of the hardbacks I bought in the last few months and haven’t wanted to carry around with me. It would be good to finish off a couple of series so I’m thinking probably Finale by Stephanie Garber or Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers. I also recently received an ARC of Holly Bourne’s new adult book Pretending so I doubt I’ll be able to resist it for long.

Currently Reading

I’ve been trying to juggle too many books lately and making not much progress on any of them so this week I’m paring it back to just one, Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff. I’ve had this book sitting on the shelf for a couple of months now and I’ve also got the audio (I find it easier than the book) so I’m kind of flipping between the two and having a brilliant time. I only started it on Sunday but as I ventured out for a very long walk (partly as an excuse to listen to this) I’m around 8 hours in (13 or so to go). It’s not been that long since I read the first two books so I’ve found it very easy to jump back into the story and the style. Mia is definitely one of the best characters I’ve come across, I’m not sure how I’m going to cope when her story comes to an end. Does anyone know if there’s a support group?

Recently Finished

I had a bit of a fight with my laptop last week and didn’t do a WWW post (the laptop won) so this is two weeks worth of books rather than just one.

First up was The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black, the third and final book in the trilogy. I’ve read some rather mixed review of it but I liked it. It did feel a little bit rushed and I’m not sure every character got the ending I would have liked but I flew through it and loved every moment.

My focus for reading is not great yet again so decided to stick with some easier reads and picked up A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones next. This has been the year of Darynda Jones as over the last 12 months or so I’ve read all 13 of the Charley Davidson books. They’ve kept me sane and made me laugh through house moves, renovations and changes at work. I had high hopes for this, the first book in a new series, but found myself not wholly convinced by it. It may just be because it’s a first book but it seemed to take a while to get going. It also feels a little too similar to the Charley Davidson books, similar characters, same humour. I did get hooked towards the end and will no doubt read on but it would’ve been nice to get something different.

After A Bad Day for Sunshine I decided to read Karen Swan’s The Christmas Party. Swan is another favourite author so I was looking forward to this however yet again I found myself struggling to get into to story – I’m starting to think it’s me. It was a little bit slow at the start but unfortunately I think my biggest issue was the characters. It’s told from the pov of three sisters and for around the first third I did not like any of them. Thankfully they did start to grow on me and towards the end I found myself hooked but overall this was slow going, and I’m sorry to say, not that memorable.

Thankfully after those not fantastic reads my library hold on The Places I’ve Cried in Public by Holly Bourne came in, so I dived straight in and it did not disappoint. It isn’t an easy read, it’s frustrating and a little bit heartbreaking but it is brilliant. It’s all about a girl struggling to get over what was an incredibly toxic relationship. Bourne does an amazing job of creating very authentic characters and relationships which bring the story to life. It’s an important book, but it’s also a very well written book. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a YA contemporary that’s not all hearts and flowers.

Reading Next

I’ve decided that December will be a bit of a read what I like month (I made a small dent in my ARCs last month) so I’m hoping to finally pick up some of the books I bought ages ago and maybe finish a few series’. Most of the series I am close to finishing seem to be fantasy but as I’m midway through a fantasy right now I think I may go for Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers next. I’m also in the mood for some Christmas reads so may also pick up The Christmas Wish List by Heidi Swain.
