This week my teaser comes from Feminist Fight Club by Jessica Bennett which I finished reading yesterday but felt I really should share a teaser from. I don’t usually read non fiction but this has some fascinating ideas and useful tactics for dealing with sexist behaviour and self sabotaging in the work place.

My Teaser

Luck: a thing that women give credit to for their success. What men give credit to: skill.

Feminist Fight Club: An Office Survival Manual for a Sexist WorkplaceBlurb

Part manual, part manifesto, a humorous yet incisive guide to navigating subtle sexism at work—a pocketbook Lean In for theBuzzfeed generation that provides real-life career advice and humorous reinforcement for a new generation of professional women.

It was a fight club—but without the fighting and without the men. Every month, the women would huddle in a friend’s apartment to share sexist job frustrations and trade tips for how best to tackle them. Once upon a time, you might have called them a consciousness-raising group. But the problems of today’s working world are more subtle, less pronounced, harder to identify—and, if Ellen Pao is any indication, harder to prove—than those of their foremothers. These women weren’t just there to vent. They needed battle tactics. And so the fight club was born.

Hard-hitting and entertaining, Feminist Fight Club blends personal stories with research, statistics, infographics, and no-bullsh*t expert advice. Bennett offers a new vocabulary for the sexist workplace archetypes women encounter everyday—such as the Manterrupter who talks over female colleagues in meetings or the Himitator who appropriates their ideas—and provides practical hacks for navigating other gender landmines in today’s working world. With original illustrations, Feminist Mad Libs, a Negotiation Cheat Sheet, as well as fascinating historical research and a kit for “How to Start Your Own Club,”Feminist Fight Club tackles both the external (sexist) and internal (self-sabotaging) behaviors that plague today’s women—as well as the system that perpetuates them.

Happy reading everyone.

I know it’s only September but I just couldn’t resist when I received it from NetGalley. I love Sarah Morgan Christmas books and I think this could be one of her best as it’s just so funny and sweet.

This week my teaser comes from Immortal Writers by Jill Bowers which I received from NetGalley. It’s a bit of an odd book that I can’t make my mind up about. I almost gave up on it after the first few chapters but persevered. It’s the type of story I love, parts of it are really fun and it’s bizarrely addictive but there’s something not quite right about the writing.

Anyway it’s not out for another couple of months so no guarantees the teaser I’ve picked will be in the final version.

My Teaser

“We’re all just stories,” Liz said, looking down at him. “Wonderful or horrible, we’re just words and actions and plots and characters. Just stories.

~ location 4619, Immortal Writers by Jill Bowers

Immortal WritersBlurb

Liz is quickly initiated into the Immortal Writers, a group of authors from throughout time whose words have given them eternal life, and whose prose is so powerful that it’s brought stories over from the Imagination Field into the Reality Field. TeaserThis week my teaser comes from Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard which is the second in the Red Queen Series. I actually finished this book yesterday and liked it a lot. It’s not the most unique of plots and has elements of Red Rising, Hunger Games and various other stories but it’s very enjoyable and I can’t wait for the next one.

No spoilers in the teaser but there may be some mild ones for the first book in the blurb.

My Teaser

She stares at her feet, fixating on the floor below. I know her look well, the look of a shattered soul. If you speak, if you move, you’ll collapse.

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2)Blurb

I was born to kill a king, to end a reign of terror before it can truly begin.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red, the colour of common folk, but her Silver ability – the power to control lightning – has turned her into a weapon that the Silver court will do anything to destroy.

With no one left to trust, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join the uprising. But Mare is treading a deadly path. Will she shatter under the weight of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

TeaserThis week my teaser comes from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I have to admit I’ve never read this book, or in fact watched the film, so it’s all completely new to me and I’m not entirely sure what it’s about but I’ve been wanting to read more classics. Only about 15% in but so far I’m enjoying it.

My Teaser

“I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”

~ location 278, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

BlurbThe Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.

TeaserThis week my teaser comes from A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. Yep, after having it on my reading next list for the last two months I have finally started it. OK, as I type this I’ve only read 2 pages but I’m still counting that 🙂

A Long Way DownMy Teaser

Whenever I’ve had to moan before – when I need another prescription for my anti-depressants, for example – I always mention the toilet bit, the cleaning up that needs doing most days. It’s funny, because it’s the bit I’ve got used to. I can’t get used to the idea that my life is finished, pointless, too hard, completely without hope or colour; but the mopping up doesn’t really worry me anymore.

“Can I explain why I wanted to jump off the top of a tower block?”

For disgraced TB presenter Martin Sharp the answer’s pretty simple; he has, in his own words, ‘pissed his life away’. And on New Year’s Eve he’s going to end it all…but not, as it happens, alone. Because first single-mum Maureen, then eighteen-year-old Jess and lastly failed-musician-turned-pizza-boy JJ turn up and crash Martin’s private party. They’ve stolen his idea – but brought their own reasons.

Yet it’s hard to jump when you’ve got an audience queuing impatiently behind you. A few heated words and some slices of cold pizza later and these four strangers are suddenly allies. But is their unlikely friendship a good enough reason to carry on living?

TeaserThis week my teaser comes from Resistance is Futile by Jenny Colgan which I started reading at the weekend but have to admit I haven’t gotten very far with. I’m generally a big fan of all things Jenny but struggling a little to get into this one. I think it may be all of the math 🙂

Resistance Is Futile by [Colgan, Jenny T.]My Teaser

‘You have…’ The strange man made a gesturing movement to the side of her head. He seemed to be groping for the word, and Connie wondered where he was from. The amount of people who felt the need to point out that she had bright red hair never ceased to surprise her. ‘…hair,’ he settled on finally. He couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off it.

~ Page 11 Resistance if Futile by Jenny Colgan

Synopsis (from Amazon UK)

Connie’s smart. She’s funny. But when it comes to love, she’s only human.

As a brilliant mathematician with bright red hair – Connie’s used to being considered a little unusual. But when she’s recruited for a top-secret code-breaking project, nothing can prepare her for working with someone quite as peculiar as Luke.

TeaserThis week my teaser comes from The Ex Factor by Eva Woods which I received as an ARC from NetGalley.  I’m being a little bit of a cheat as I’ve picked the couple of sentences I want to share rather than picking at random. Sorry but as it referenced another literally work and made me laugh I couldn’t resist.

Warning, there are some spoilers for Tess of the D’Urbevilles if you don’t know the story.

The Ex FactorMy Teaser

Tess of the D’Urbevilles, right – she had a pretty good thing going with that dairy. Why didn’t she set up her own business selling organic yoghurts? But no, instead she gets ditched by slut-shaming Angel and then heads on back to rapey old Alec.

Synopsis (from GoodReads)

Is it possible to freecycle love?

Modern dating is hard, especially when all you meet are liars, oddballs, men who wear Superman pants and men who live with their mums.

So why not date someone who already comes pre-approved? Just because your friend’s ex wasn’t right for her doesn’t mean that he won’t be right for you. That’s Marnie’s new plan for herself and her three best friends, perennially single Helen, recently divorced Rosa and cynical lawyer Ani.

Through bad dates and good, the four friends begin to realise that there are advantages to dating pre-screened men…but there can be some serious pitfalls to falling for your friend’s ex.

TeaserThis week I’m reading More than This by Patrick Ness. I’m a huge, big fan of Patrick Ness and I don’t think I’ve come across a bad book yet. This is no exception. I’m around halfway through and I’m absolutely loving it so far. It’s not a happy cheery read but there’s something totally addictive about it. Anyway, here’s this weeks teaser.

More Than ThisMy Teaser

An impossible amount of time passes, a day, a year, maybe even and eternity, there is no way he can know. Finally, in the distance, the light begins to slowly, almost imperceptively change. A greyness emerges, then a lighter greyness, and he starts to come back to himself.

As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?

TeaserThis week my teaser is from classic romance Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It’s one of my all time favourite books and I recently bought a brand new hardback copy from Waterstones. I’d been staring at it in the shops for months and finally caved. Look it’s just sooo pretty.

Oh, there probably is a mild spoiler in my teaser but I’m assuming everyone knows the story 🙂

Jane Eyre Cover

My Teaser

I was experiencing an ordeal: a hand of fiery iron grasped my vitals. Terrible moment: full of struggle, blackness, burning! Not a human being that ever lived could wish to be better loved than I was loved; and him who thus loved me I absolutely worshipped: and I must renounce love and idol. One drear word comprised my intolerable duty – “Depart!”
