Currently Reading
I started reading The Twisted Tree by Rachel Burge on Monday and am almost finished it already. It’s not especially long (180 pages) but it’s so gripping and creepy I’m finding it difficult to put down. It’s primarily a ghost story but also brings in lots of Norse mythology and a little bit of romance. I do love a creepy ghost story set in a remote location, I just hope it manages to hold the tension till the very end.
As well as a spooky ghost story I’ve also been dipping in and out of non fiction book Have You Eaten Grandma? by Giles Brandreth. The title is a bit of a clue but it’s all about the proper use of grammar and the often unintended funny consequences of it’s misuse. So far I’ve covered full stops and commas and am just about to start the section on semi colons (have to confess I don’t really know what to do with a semi colon).
On audio I’m still listening to Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare and have made reasonable progress. Still not sure I’ll get it finished before it’s due back (hopefully there aren’t any holds on it) but I think I’m actually preferring the audio to the books. I’ve never been as keen on the Infernal Devices as I was on the Mortal Instruments but this book could change my mind. The narrator has a lovely voice and his use of accents is really bringing the story to life.
Recently Finished
Only one book finished again this week I’m afraid, but A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness was definitely worth the time. It’s pretty long (for me at any rate) and not necessarily the fastest of reads but I am hooked on this trilogy. It kind of reminds me a little of Anne Rice’s books which I haven’t read in years but used to absolutely love. Slow paced but with a lot of character development and, once you think about it, quite a lot of ground covered. I loved Diana as a character and the relationship with Mathew was just so good (albeit kinda Twilight-y).
I’ve now started binge watching the TV show which is pretty good but lacks the depth and detail of the book (and could maybe do with a bigger special effects budget).
Reading Next
It’s pretty much guaranteed I’m going to start the second book in the All Souls trilogy, Shadow of Night, next as I had to force myself not to read the whole trilogy in one sitting. I have tickets to go see Deborah Harkness on the 30th October so it would be good to have read the books before then. After that I suspect I may be looking for a break from witches, ghosts, vampires and demons so will likely pick up What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera.

Would definitely recommend The Twisted Tree then. It was giving me the creeps, not helped by my cat who randomly started yowling at nothing.

I’ve never really got to grips with semi-colons and colons either so I hope you find some simple guidelines. The book sounds similar to Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss that came out a few years ago…

I never read Eats, Shoots and Leaves but it probably is similar. The punctuation bit was pretty straightforward but still not convinced I’ll ever use a semi colon. I do at least now have an idea what that Oxford Comma is. Have now wandered into the dark art that is spelling. Honestly there are no rules, it’s anarchy.

I was planning on getting myself a copy of What If It's Us but have read some reviews that changed my mind. I'm going to wait until the hype's died down a bit and then see how I feel about it, I think. Hope you enjoy it! 😀

I started reading the Infernal Devices a few years ago and gave up after book 2… but her new series seems to overlap so thought I should go back and see how it all ends.
I haven’t really read any reviews of What If It’s Us but I do love Adam Silvera so hopefully it’ll be ok.

I read the different series quite apart from one another so I’m curious how I’ll feel about all the books if I read them one after the other, hah. I definitely remember loving how characters’ names popped back up and I went all “Heeey! I remember that name!” This time I’ll actually be able to place everything better – I hope.

It is a little long and wandering so can understand why this will be your third (?) attempt at it. I am looking forward to book 2.

Have You Eaten Grandma? sounds great! I’m definitely going to check it out. I sometimes feel like I know what’s going on with semi colons, but honestly, I think only an elite few truly know what they’re doing wielding them.

It is quite funny. I’ve now finished semi colons (still probably won’t use them) and some other punctuation and have wandered on to the completely random and inconsistent rules around spelling. I is not always before E even if there’s no C, weird 😂

I’ve wanted to read Discover of Witches, but I still haven’t gotten to it yet. I glad you enjoyed it. I hope the series continues to be great.

It takes a bit of time to get going but I think it’s one you’d enjoy. I’m quite excited about book 2 but have been trying to get a couple of ARCs finished before diving in.

It really was. The ending was not quite as good as I hoped but it was a great read.
I’ve become a little obsessed with A Discovery of Witches. I can understand why it would be a fave. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Yeah I will admit to finding discovery of witches a bit twilighty- glad you liked it though (I’m bingeing the tv show as well 🙂 ) And I read what if it’s us recently and really enjoyed it 🙂

It is totally an adult Twilight but umm I loved Twilight. What do you think of the TV show? I’m not sure. Bits I’m loving but others are a little cringe.
