The WWW Wednesday meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words and is a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned.
To take part all you have to do is answer the following three questions:
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently Reading
I managed to get my hands on a copy of Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay on Overdrive/Libby so as there’s only 5 days left on my hold and there are 8 people waiting I thought I’d better read it. I haven’t read many books by Barclay, my Dad’s a bigger fan of his stuff than I am, but I did like the sound of this one (even if I may never get in an elevator again). I’m around a quarter of the way through as of last night and so far it’s been ok. I don’t feel like it’s completely hooked me yet. This could just be me though as I’m still feeling pretty tired and a little ropey, so struggling to focus on anything.
On audio I’m still listening to Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray. I think I’m maybe 3 hours in so still quite a bit to go (and we’re not really into the action yet) but I’m very much enjoying it.
Recently Finished
Two books finished this week, one from my Spooktober TBR (four down, 8 to go) with the other a bit of a wander off track (not sure it was worth it). I’m pretty sure you can probably guess which is which π
First book finished was Monstrous Heart by Claire McKenna, an advance copy of which I’d received from NetGalley. It’s not out till next year so I’m not entirely sure how “finished” it is but I ended up very much enjoying it. It has a few problems (nothing is explained or described so if you’re like me reading it is work) but it’s so atmospheric and the writing so wonderful that it’s easy to overlook them. I think comparisons to the Binding are probably fair as while there are some fantasy aspects it’s quite a slow read with a focus on the romance.
After the darkness of Monstrous Heart I did feel l needed something light so when I spied Melissa Foster’s latest book on NetGalley I decided to grab it and read it immediately. I’ve actually never read a book by Foster so This is Love was my first and for the most part I enjoyed it.Β It’s a fun romance that reminded me of The Bodyguard movie in terms of story. I did feel like there were too many secondary characters though and I found myself skimming through the parts they were in. I guess they’re from previous books so if you’re a fan you’ll probably be happy to catch up with them but for a newbie I wasn’t especially interested. I also felt it was a little too lovey dovey (and the characters too good) but that may just be me being my usual bitter and twisted self π
Reading Next
Gah!!! It’s been on my TBR forever so I really, really need to pick upΒ The Wych Elm by Tana French next. I always do this with French’s books and I always end up loving them once I convince myself to read them. After that I don’t know but I’m thinking maybe The Lingering by SJI Holliday. I’ve been wanting to read it for ages but tend to bump it for ARCs.
Have you read any of the books on my list this week? Any others you’d recommend? As always please feel free to leave comments and links below.
Happy Reading β€
These are all new to me! I am really intrigued by The Lingering. That cover is absolutely mesmerizing. I hope that you love all of the books on your list this week. π

I have Elevator Pitch, and hope to read it soon. I am frightened of the elevator aspect and how I might never be able to ride one again, though…LOL.
Hope you enjoy it. Here’s WWW POST

As someone who’s not a fan of enclosed spaces with lots of people crammed in I tend to avoid them anyway but yep it’s pretty gruesome in places. Hopefully it won’t traumatize you too much π

I tried a Barclay book a few years ago and couldn’t get into it. I hope it hooks you soon!

Yeah, I try them every so often too. Some work some don’t. I do like the premise of this one, I just wish it’d get into the action (assuming there is some)

I must see if my library app has Elevator Pitch as I’m keen to read it, I really enjoyed his previous novel (although the title escapes me!). I’m a bit like that with Tana French too – I’ve loved all her books that I’ve read but I do seem to wait a while to get to them. I really enjoyed The Wych Elm, I hope you love it as much. The Lingering is very good too, and would be perfect for this time of year!

I tend to be a bit hit of miss with Linwood Barclay but so far I’m enjoying Elevator Pitch. My biggest niggle is that it keeps jumping from character to character but then I’m not a fan of multiple povs. Do really want to read both the Wych Elm and The Lingering. I get the impression our tastes are similar so have high hopes I’ll enjoy just as much.

Gosh, I haven’t read Melissa Foster in forever. I’m glad you enjoyed it for the most part. I remember liking one of her books, but they all do kind of melt together in my head because of all the intertwining characters.

Yeah, I don’t mind a little bit of overlap but there must have been at least half a dozen couples from previous books and they all seemed to have these elaborate backstories (discovered they had fathered a child, father has dementia, orphaned etc). It got a bit much and I really wanted the focus on the characters at the center of it.

Oh wow. That would be a lot!

The Wych Elm is my audiobook right now – it’s not going the way I thought it would – slightly slower pace – but is still keeping me hooked!

I’ve found that tends to be the way with French’s books in the past. They have a tendency to be slow but still incredibly engaging. Very happy to hear you’re hooked though.

I have heard a lot of good things about Elevator Pitch, but as I sometimes have a bit of an issue with lifts and my knees don’t like loooong slogs up stairs anymore, I decided to give it a miss:)). I haven’t read any of Tanya French’s books, but I do know folks speak highly of her writing. I hope the coming week is a great reading week for you, Ali.
