Currently Reading
I started reading The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman at the weekend but I have to admit I’m finding it a bit of a struggle. It’s the prequel to Practical Magic, is set in the 60’s and 70’s and follows the aunts (Franny and Jet) growing up and discovering their powers. I was really excited to receive this from NetGalley as while I haven’t read Practical Magic it’s one of my favorite films. I think though I’m finding it a bit slow and drawn out. I keep finding excuses not to read it which is never a good sign.
Recently Finished
I’ve had a few days off work (last chance before it gets really hectic) and the weather hasn’t been great so I’ve managed to squeeze in quite a bit of reading and finished three books. The first of these was Invictus by Ryan Graudin which I’d received from NetGalley. It’s about five teens travelling through time to smuggle goods and I absolutely loved it. I do love time travel stories (the whole paradox thing fascinates me) but with this I also really liked the writing style and I loved the cast of characters. Definitely one I’d recommend and you can read my full review here. And, if you don’t want to start a new series, it’s a standalone so you have no excuse 🙂
Second book finished this week was Moonlight over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan which I also received from Netgalley (I’m now at 79% people). I love Sarah Morgan books and always look forward to her Christmas romances, they’re perfect for getting you in the festive spirit. This one has a shy and very kind main character, a sexy ER doc as the love interest and a misbehaving dog so needless to say I enjoyed it a lot. You can read my full review here.
The third and final book finished this week was The Haunting by Alex Bell. I recently read and loved two of the authors other creepy horror stories, Frozen Charlotte and Charlotte Says, so couldn’t resist this when I spotted it for 99p on Amazon. It’s a really quick and easy read and while not quite as good as the Charlotte books it still completely sucked me in. This time it’s a haunted hotel rather than some creepy little dolls but with things moving around, a curse and maybe the ghost of a witch in the cellar it’s still a spooky read.
Reading Next
I came across my copy of The Boy on the Bridge by M.R. Carey yesterday when I was looking for something to use for a teaser and it’s made me very tempted to pick it up next. I’m in a bit of a horror mood at the moment (I watched IT and the Descent on Monday). I also really want to get above that 80% mark at NetGalley so I think I may also pick up Undercover Princess by Connie Glynn or The Break by Marian Keyes.

A Bookish Life 
I really love the sound of Invictus! I have a vague feeling it might already be on my TBR but I will have to check.
I have looked at a few of Alice Hoffman’s books but never read any of them because I’m not sure I’ll enjoy her. I do enjoy the Practical Magic movie, though.

Would definitely recommend Invictus.
I previously read Faithful by Alice Hoffman and absolutely loved it so I’m not sure what’s going wrong with Rules of Magic. I’m just not feeling anything and I think with this type of story you really need to.

I’m nowhere close to finishing The Rules Of Magic and I keep finding excuses not to read as well… I went in blind (I didn’t read Practical Magic or see the movie), and I’m wondering if that is holding me back. I’m now kinda forcing myself to read it and have made it to 52%. I keep hoping it’s going to shift up a gear but it’s still a little flat. Far too much explanation of magic I think and not enough action.
I haven’t read Practical Magic either but I don’t think it got the best reviews. I suspect it may be my love of the film that’s holding me back. I’m expecting the book to be the same and it’s really not.

Oh no! I’m still at only 9% since I haven’t read much in the last few days but that doesn’t sound promising at all. I guess loving the movie can go both ways… A shame it doesn’t live up to it. (I’m kind of curious about the movie though now; I’m wondering if I saw it before and don’t remember it?)

Very possibly it’s quite an old movie now. It’s one of those one’s I watch every time I come across it. I suspect not an all time classic, more a guilty pleasure

I’m hoping to read The Girl with the Gifts this month – it sounds like a good book for Halloween. I love the movie, Practical Magic, but I’ve never read the book. I’m sorry the prequel is slow going. I’m convinced to try Invictus, especially since it’s a stand alone! It sounds really good.

I am reading The Rules of Magic, but I’m not that far into it. So far, not bad, but it won’t be a page turner for me, I suspect.

I found out like a week ago that “The Rules of Magic” was coming out. I literally a few days before bought “Practical Magic” to finally read finally, since I also love the movie, only to find out this prequel was coming out. Now I feel like if I start the other I need to get this one which has put a bit of a damper on getting to it.

The movie is brilliant. Reading Rules has put me in the mood to watch it. You wouldn’t need to read both. You should try Practical Magic and see how you go. I should also add despite my gripes and initial struggle with Rules of Magic it does get a lot better so was worth sticking with. Although I’m now really depressed.

I’m so excited to read Invictus! I’ve only heard great things about it so far, which is pretty awesome. Ryan Graudin really knows how to write such fun stories!

It is brilliant. This was my first book by Graudin. I do however have Wolf by Wolf. Just haven’t gotten around to reading yet.

I really enjoyed Invictus as well! My only wish was that we got to know the characters a little more in depth, but that might have been just me!

I can totally understand that. When there are five povs you never really get too deep on any one. That’s kind of why I’d love it to be a series.
