Currently ReadingHis Bloody Project

I’ve been very indecisive about what to read at the moment but at the end of last week I decided to pick up His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet. I’m not usually a fan of historic fiction but I have been known to make an exception for Scottish history and am really enjoying so far. The story is about a triple murder in a Scottish crofting community in 1869 and is in the form of a collection of documents from the time including witness statements and the memoir of the accused.

It’s not a particularly fast paced story but it’s fascinating reading about life back then and the characters are very well defined despite the unusual format.

Recently FinishedThe Trespasser (Dublin Murder Squad, #6)

Two and a half books finished this week which is a definite improvement on last week’s zero.

The first of these was The Trespasser by Tana French which I’d received as an ARC from NetGalley. It’s the sixth book in the Dublin Murder Squad series and follows Detective Antoinette Conway and her investigation into the murder of a young woman.

I’m a big fan of Tana French and have loved pretty much all of her books but I think this could be one of my favourites. I think the success or otherwise of her books comes down to the narrator and Conway was a brilliant one in my opinion. I will hopefully get a full review up soon but it’s definitely a book I would recommend even if you haven’t read the earlier books in the series.The Chemist

The next book finished was The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer which I managed to borrow from the library. It’s about a scientist on the run after the secret Government department she was working for tried to kill her. When they contact her and offer her her freedom in exchange for one last job she decides to take a chance but all is not as it seems.

For the most part I found this an enjoyable read but I don’t think there was anything that particularly stood out. A lot of it reminded me of Meyer’s The Host (there are some very similar characters) but without the whole invasion of the body snatchers element there wasn’t much unique about it. This wasn’t helped by a slightly disappointing male lead and some insta love.

The final book, or half book as it was a novella, finished was Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover. Have to admit I haven’t read Maybe Someday which this story is related to but I had a gap and was looking for something quick and easy to read. It was fine but again nothing particularly special. Had a couple of funny moments but like most novellas there wasn’t enough for me to get invested in.

Reading Next

Still haven’t started real life book club book The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo yet so it should be next on my list but I’ve managed to get hold of another couple of books I really want to read so there’s a fair chance it won’t be. I will definitely be picking up Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern this weekend as it’s a library book and due back and I think I may also try to fit in The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson.

      • I LOVED it, but I don’t think it’s a book for everyone hahaha I recommended to a friend and she said it was too confusing. I don’t know, it’s my fave by Jo Nesbo but also his most different book. It’s like crime + historical fiction.

      • Hmm. Someone else in the club has started and is struggling with the historical bit which is probably what’s putting me off. Is it ok to read if you haven’t read the previous two books in the series? I was thinking of using that as my excuse 🙂

      • It’s the first one I read XD But yes, you need to make an effort. I loved it because of the twists and turns and I think it’s better and more complex than the previous ones.

  2. I’m glad you’re enjoying your foray into historical crime fiction. I passed on my copy of The Chemist to my son-in-law as it didn’t really appeal to me so I’m awaiting his verdict 😉 I hope you get to your book club read soon!

  3. Happy Wednesday! I’ll be interested to hear what you think about His Bloody Project. I was quite disappointed. I’ll also be interested to know what you think about the Chemist. (I enjoyed the Host but hated Twilight).

    • I’m actually quite enjoying His Bloody Project. I’m around the 60% mark so hopefully it won’t all go wrong 🙂

      The Chemist is definitely much more like the Host than Twilight (although I did like Twilight too). I’d probably describe the Chemist as enjoyable at the time but instantly forgettable unfortunately.

  6. Lots of good books! I still want to read The Trespasser and The Chemist. I preordered both of them, but haven’t gotten time to read them, of course. Enjoy your reads this week!

    • I think how good they are depends on whether you like the main character. I have to admit to struggling a bit with Faithful Place and Broken Harbour as I wasn’t keen on the MC. I did enjoy in the end but struggled at the start. Trespasser I loved pretty much from the start.

  11. His Bloody Project sounds like an intriguing read – I like when books are told through documents and such. Especially books relating to crime. I think it makes for a better reading experience. I hope you enjoy!

    Lyrebird is on my list of books I want to read… I’m actually getting it for Christmas as Cecelia Ahern is one of my favourite authors. Lyrebird is currently in the line up to be my first read of the year. I hope you enjoy it, and manage to squeeze it in before due back at the library.

    • I think this may be my first book in that format so I’m finding it a very different experience. It does work really well as it gives you so many different perspectives. Lyrebird will almost definitely be this weekend as my mum wants to read before it’s due back. I hope it lives up to expectations.

  13. I was mildly interested in The Chemist, mostly just to see whether Stephanie Meyer’s writing has improved at all, but all the reviews I read seem to be in agreement with your comments. It’s not something that I would probably read, generally, so I think I’m going to give it a pass.

    Good to hear Tara French’s book was so good, though! 😀
