This week my teaser comes from King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard, the third book in the Red Queen series. I received this from NetGalley but was planning to buy it regardless as I’ve been looking forward to it since I read the previous book in the series at the end of last year. It’s a series that gets mixed reviews but I’ve been really enjoying despite it’s similarities to other YA sci fi books.

My Teaser

For a prince, he really lets himself go in times of crisis. Right now he looks like he needs a shower and a shave, not to mention a few well aimed slaps to wake him out of his stupor.

~ 9% The King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard

BlurbKing's Cage (Red Queen, #3)

In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

I’m on holiday this week so may be a little slow in responding to comments but I promise I’ll get there eventually.

This week my teaser comes from The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Shocking as it is to admit this is my first ever Gaiman but I very much doubt it will be my last as I’ve fallen in love with his writing. There’s just something magical about it.

My Teaser

The dread had not left my soul.

But there was a kitten on my pillow, and it was purring in my face and vibrating gently with every purr, and very soon, I slept

~ pg 143 The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

BlurbThe Ocean at the End of the Lane

THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac – as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly’s wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark – from storytelling genius Neil Gaiman.

It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond this world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed – within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.

His only defence is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.

Happy Valentines Day everyone!!! Or if you’re like me Happy Singles Awareness Day (I’m totally offended the acronym for that is SAD). Anyway, this week my teaser comes from Mystery at Maplemead Castle by Kitty French, a title I received from NetGalley on Friday evening and had finished by Saturday morning. It’s such a fun read and has just the right amount of romance and mystery.

My Teaser

‘I’m not sure that knowing the colour of my underwear is a compliment, it’s more of a letchy observation.’ I frown. ‘And as for my ass…’ I look down. ‘It’s the dead woman’s shoes. They make my legs look longer.’

Mystery at Maplemead Castle (The Chapelwick Mysteries #2)Welcome to Chapelwick, a leafy English town in the hills of Shropshire, where chocolate pecan cookies come with a helping of sabotage.

Maplemead Castle is crawling with ghosts, and the new owners need them gone. When Melody Bittersweet and the Girls’ Ghostbusting Agency arrive on scene, they quickly identify the troublemakers swinging from the chandeliers… literally.

A century ago, stunning trapeze artist Britannia Lovell plunged to her death, and has done every night since. But did she really just fall, or was there something more to her demise?

Forced to work with Leo Dark, her scoundrel ex, and infuriating, irresistible reporter Fletcher Gunn, Melody’s investigative powers are under strain (i.e. lost in a pink mist of lust and confusion). She needs her team on top form, but best friend Marina’s cake pipeline goes AWOL, assistant Artie’s distracted by a giant sausage roll, and the pug is scared witless by a lion.

Somewhere, hidden in the castle, is a heart-breaking secret, but what will it take to find it? And is there a chance it could set Britannia free, or is she doomed to repeat her last fateful act forever?

An utterly hilarious, gripping, spooktastic read for fans of HY Hanna, MC Beaton, Gina LaManna and Jana DeLeon.

This week my teaser comes from The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. I read this book last week but loved it so much I just had to use it for this week’s teaser. Reading this did get me in so much trouble but it was so worth it. Who needs sleep when you’re reading something this good.

My Teaser

It’s a corporate truth universally acknowledged that workers would rather eat rat skeletons than participate in group activities. I know I would.

~ pg 63 The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

BlurbThe Hating Game

Nemesis (n.)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome;
2) A person’s undoing;
3) Joshua Templeman.

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

This week my teaser comes from Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton which I received from NetGalley. It’s the sequel to Rebel of the Sands which I read last year and enjoyed but didn’t love. This however, I did love. It’s full of magic and adventure, legends and myths and has some of the best world building I’ve come across. There’s also quite a bit of intrigue and betrayal and quite a few surprises.

Warning: As this is a sequel there are spoilers in the blurb for the first book (the teaser is spoiler free)

My Teaser

And just like that, everyone was looking at me. If I’d known I was doomed to get this much attention I might’ve brushed my hair.

~ 85% Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton

BlurbTraitor to the Throne (Rebel of the Sands #2)

This is not about blood or love. This is about treason.

Nearly a year has passed since Amani and the rebels won their epic battle at Fahali. Amani has come into both her powers and her reputation as the Blue-Eyed Bandit, and the Rebel Prince’s message has spread across the desert – and some might say out of control. But when a surprise encounter turns into a brutal kidnapping, Amani finds herself betrayed in the cruellest manner possible.

Stripped of her powers and her identity, and torn from the man she loves, Amani must return to her desert-girl’s instinct for survival. For the Sultan’s palace is a dangerous one, and the harem is a viper’s nest of suspicion, fear and intrigue. Just the right place for a spy to thrive… But spying is a dangerous game, and when ghosts from Amani’s past emerge to haunt her, she begins to wonder if she can trust her own treacherous heart.

This week my teaser comes from Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. It’s a thriller I received from NetGalley about a woman, Louise, who gets drawn into the complicated, and slightly unsettling, marriage of David and Adele. I finished this book at the weekend and while I had a small issue over an element of the plot I really enjoyed it. It’s one of those rare creatures, a psychological thriller with a MC you kind of like.

My Teaser

To trust the truth of a thing, you have to suffer the thing. You have to get mud on your hands and dirt under your fingernails. You have to dig for it.

~ 73% Behind her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

BlurbBehind Her Eyes

Don’t trust this book. Don’t trust this story. Don’t trust yourself.

‘Sarah Pinborough is about to become your new obsession’ Harlan Coben

David and Adele seem like the ideal pair. He’s a successful psychiatrist, she is his picture-perfect wife who adores him. But why is he so controlling? And why is she keeping things hidden?

As Louise, David’s new secretary, is drawn into their world, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can’t guess how wrong – and how far someone might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

‘The most unsettling thriller of the year… Read it now before someone spoils the end for you’ John Connolly

This week my teaser comes from A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this from the publishers via NetGalley. It’s a brilliant book about a girl who suffers from anxiety so severely that she finds it difficult to speak and then she meets a deaf boy and starts to find her voice. It’s a very sweet story and despite the blurb is not a romance cures all story. There is a very cute romance in it but it’s really a coming of age story and paints a very real picture of life with an anxiety disorder.

My Teaser

My heart stills. That’s what it feels like – not a thundering panic or a twist of pain; it goes quiet, like it’s bracing itself. I can feel something building in my head.

~ 36%, A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

BlurbA Quiet Kind of Thunder

Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say.
Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.
Their love isn’t a lightning strike, it’s the rumbling roll of thunder.

Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life – she’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to look after him. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk, and as they find ways to communicate, Steffi finds that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it.

From the bestselling author of Beautiful Broken Things comes a love story about the times when a whisper is as good as a shout.

This week my teaser comes from Proxy by Alex London. It’s the first book in a YA dystopian sci fi duology and I first heard about it from Leigh Bardugo when I saw her on her recent book tour. I’m so glad I listened to her recommendation as it’s a fast paced and exciting read with very likeable (and diverse) characters.

My Teaser

She was a private thing. He’d built an airtight container around her memory and only he could slip inside it. Talking about her let the world in and the memory began to decay.

~ 81%, Proxy by Alex London

BlurbProxy (Proxy, #1)

Knox was born into one of the City’s wealthiest families. A Patron, he has everything a boy could possibly want—the latest tech, the coolest clothes, and a Proxy to take all his punishments. When Knox breaks a vase, Syd is beaten. When Knox plays a practical joke, Syd is forced to haul rocks. And when Knox crashes a car, killing one of his friends, Syd is branded and sentenced to death.

Syd is a Proxy. His life is not his own.

Then again, neither is Knox’s. Knox and Syd have more in common than either would guess. So when Knox and Syd realize that the only way to beat the system is to save each other, they flee. Yet Knox’s father is no ordinary Patron, and Syd is no ordinary Proxy. The ensuing cross-country chase will uncover a secret society of rebels, test both boys’ resolve, and shine a blinding light onto a world of those who owe and those who pay. Some debts, it turns out, cannot be repaid.

Happy 2017 everyone!! I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year if you celebrate it. It actually scares me that we’re in 2017, where does the time go?

Anyway,.this week my teaser comes from The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr which I finished at the weekend and absolutely loved. I found it an addictive and kind of inspiring read so I couldn’t resist using it for a teaser.

My Teaser

Although I feel like nothing could hurt me, a fight with a polar bear is probably not a thing I should seek out. If I have already seen them, there is no need for me to do it again.

The One Memory of Flora BanksSeventeen-year-old Flora Banks has no short-term memory. Her mind resets itself several times a day, and has since the age of ten, when the tumor that was removed from Flora’s brain took with it her ability to make new memories. That is, until she kisses Drake, her best friend’s boyfriend, the night before he leaves town. Miraculously, this one memory breaks through Flora’s fractured mind, and sticks. Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life.

With little more than the words “be brave” inked into her skin, and written reminders of who she is and why her memory is so limited, Flora sets off on an impossible journey to Svalbard, Norway, the land of the midnight sun, determined to find Drake. But from the moment she arrives in the arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must “be brave” if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home.

This week I was planning to do something festive but I found a great couple of sentences in my current read, It Ends with Us, so couldn’t resist.

My Teaser

Ellen, I am confident that the next sentence I am about to write has never been written or spoken aloud before.

When he was wiping that cow shit on me, it was quite possibly the most turned-on I have ever been.

~ Page 107, It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

BlurbIt Ends with Us

SOMETIMES THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU IS THE ONE WHO HURTS YOU THE MOST

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up – she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan – her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

Happy holidays everyone.
