Currently ReadingAnd Then She Vanishes

I started reading Then She Vanishes by Claire Douglas at the weekend but I have to confess progress has been on the slow side. Nothing against the story or the writing, the start was gripping, I’m just struggling to focus on anything at the moment.

My lack of focus is probably not being helped by starting to read choose your own adventure story Infected by James Schannep. It’s been years since I read a gamebook and this one is proving totally addictive. I’ve run through a couple of different possibly paths so far and one thing is quickly becoming clear, I will not survive a zombie apocalypse.

Recently Finished

I was on holiday from work last week which should have meant more reading time but having just completed a pretty intensive team reading challenge I felt like I needed a bit of a break to recharge my reading batteries. It’s therefore been all about the easy reads, lots of romcoms and rereads.

  • The Bookshop on the Shore by Jenny Colgan  – I’m a big fan of Colgan but it’d been a while since I read any of her books so it was quite nice to settle into this, her latest one. It’s quite a sweet and easy read but while it has a little more depth than the usual romcom I’m not sure it’ll stay with me. Still it made for a great holiday read.
  • The Bride Test by Helen Hoang – I absolutely loved The Kiss Quotient, a gender switched Pretty Woman, so had been both wary and excited about The Bride Test. I wasn’t entirely sure Hoang could do it again but this exceeded expectations. It’s sweet, funny and there’s a lot of chemistry between the leads. You can read my full review here.
  • At Graves End by Jeaniene Frost – My re read (or listen to be more accurate) continued with the third book in the Night Huntress series. I was doing a lot of walking and driving so I blitzed through this in a couple of days, enjoying it almost as much as the first time. They just make me laugh (and thankfully my walks have been along fairly deserted beaches).
  • Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost – So Vlad popped up in At Graves End and reminded me how much I loved him. Needless to say I wandered off from Night Huntress and onto the spin-off series of books about him.

Reading Next

I am on a mission this month to try and get my NetGalley shelf under control and there seems to be an awful lot of YA fantasy lurking on it so I think I’ll probably pick up one of the following.

    • I’ve seen quite a few mentions of it too but have been deliberately steering clear of reviews for a change. Too often I’ve been letting others thoughts influence my own so I’m going in blind for once.

  3. Hi ali. I definitely feel you on needing to get your shelf under control. In my case, it’s the TBR I physically own, which is even more intimidating since it’s staring me right in the face every time I enter my living room! Those fantasy books look interesting just judging by the cover, I hope you enjoy them! Best wishes 🙂

      • That’s one way to go about it! 😂 Not really an option for me though because I just love to stare at my shelves all the time. It’s a bit of a love/hate relationship I think!

      • I had mixed thoughts about The Kiss Quotient actually (the sexy scenes, what a surprise! xD), but I did love her writing and her character development.

      • You may fare better with the Bride Test. There are still sexy scenes but it’s a smaller part of the story (or maybe I’ve just read so many of these types lately I don’t notice anymore)

      • I don’t always mind sexy scenes (I have loved some including The Hating Game, The Smallest Part and CoHo books), so I’m definitely curious to see how I’ll react to The Bride Test now!

  5. It’s so easy to fall behind on NG, isn’t it? I have the same goal this summer, in general, since I fell a little behind. xD I’ve read Shadow of the Fox and thought it was really fun! Reads a lot like an anime/manga without pictures. I actually just finished reading the sequel this week. :3 We Hunt the Flame and Sorcery of Thorns are both on my TBR, and they both look great, too! Happy reading.

    • I’ve been behind pretty much since I started 😂 Lately the problem has not been reading the books but writing up the reviews. I currently have 15 I have read but am yet to review 😱

      So glad you enjoyed Shadow of the Fox. You can usually rely on Kagawa to write a great story (and kill off your fave character).

      So many great looking fantasy books around just now.

      • … oh, shoot. Now that you mention it, I’ve got two books I previously read and forgot to write reviews for. Oops. Welp. You are clearly not alone in that, either. xD I’m trying to get in the habit of writing chunks of review as I read, because then quotes and events are fresh in my mind.

        I mean, to be fair, I’m the sort of reader/watcher, apparently, where my favorite characters die 95% of the time anyway. It’s a running joke in my family. Whenever we go to a movie, they make sure to ask who my favorite is so they know who’s going to die by the end. -.-; I haven’t read any other Kagawa books, though. Is there one you’d recommend I start with after this series?

      • I keep saying I won’t start a new book till I write the review of the one I’ve just finished but it’s just too tempting to read a few pages.

        I really liked Kagawa’s Talon series (dragons!!!!) and while I’ve only read the first book Blood of Eden was great too. I am not a fan of her Iron Fey series (although again have only read the first couple).

      • And then when you read a few, it’s hard to stop. xD I hear you. Plus, some books I just don’t know what the heck to say about them.

        Oh, you totally had me at dragons. And look! It’s on a $1.99 sale on Amazon right now. Clearly, I’m meant to read that. Talon it is!
