The WWW Wednesday meme is currently hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words and is a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned.
To take part all you have to do is answer the following three questions:
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently Reading
I’m on a little bit of a reading break at the moment while I catch up with reviews, blog posts, get ready for a holiday at the end of the month and try to figure out some other life stuff but I’m pretty sure I’ll pick something new up within the next day or two. It’s not a complete break as I am still listening to Call Me By Your Name by Andre Acimen on audio. I’ve only got about an hour left, so am very nearly finished but I’m not entirely sure what I think about it. It’s a tad over the top and a bit weird, there’s being a bit obsessed with someone and there’s being a creeper and it kind of feels like Elio’s a creeper.
I also seem to be having issues with either my phone or the Overdrive app as it keeps playing this at random unexpected moments and this is not a book you suddenly want blasting from your phone in the office or on the train.
Recently Finished
The first book finished this week was Frat Girl by Kiley Roache which I’d received from NetGalley. I was really looking forward to this story about a girl who moves into a frat to prove how sexist and evil they are but unfortunately it ended up being a little bit of a let down. I’m loving the current trend for feminist reads but this lacked emotion and spent a bit too much time reciting theories and different opinions on the issues. I never formed any connection or attachment to any of the characters and consequently wasn’t particularly invested in the story.
After Frat Girl I was in the mood for something light and fluffy (and needed something for a challenge) so picked up Adventurous Proposal by Laura Barnard. It’s about a woman who when stood up meets another guy at the bar and they have such a great time they agree to get married within a month and get to know each other properly later. I did love the premise of this and it’s a quick and easy read but the fact that it was so short meant I never got into it. There are also so many doubts and twists that I didn’t feel any real spark between the leads.
The next book finished was another NetGalley pick, Sam and Ilsa’s Last Hurrah by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. It’s about twins Sam and Ilsa who are throwing a final dinner party in their grandmother’s apartment before Gran sells up and moves to Paris and they head off to college/adulting. They can each invite three guests and it’s safe to say they’re a mixed bunch. There are ex’s, potential love interests and virtual strangers. I very much enjoyed this book particularly for the diversity in the characters and the interactions between them. The whole thing takes place over the course of an evening and within an apartment so it’s impressive that it manages to hold your attention. There were a couple of niggles and it’s not quite as good as Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares in my opinion but still worth a read.
The fourth and final book finished this week was Genesis by Brendan Reichs. This appeared on NetGalley and I couldn’t resist requesting despite having mixed views on the first book in this series Nemesis (you can read my review here). I am however really glad I did pick it up as it was such an action packed and gripping read. I did have a couple of issues, I’m not sure of some of the plot elements and I feel there were too many characters, but I did find myself becoming completely addicted as I had no idea where it was going to go. My full review will be up soon but I would recommend this series.
Reading Next
Due to my wandering off track a little my reading next list is pretty much the same as last week. I am however adding Red Sister to the list as I insanely requested and was approved for sequel Grey Sister (I really need to stop doing things like this).
Have you read any of the books on my list this week? Any others you’d recommend? As always please feel free to leave comments and links below.
Happy Reading ❤
That’s crazy! I’m happy I’ve never had that happen with overdrive! So embarrassing!

Yep. I’m keeping headphones permanently plugged in to my phone. I still occasionally hear it playing but at least it’s quiet.

I do have to admit I was listening to a book at the gym. When I walked out with my headphones on, I think the guy walking next to me might have heard a little bit of my story — right at a very intimate part! At least I assumed he did because he started laughing out of nowhere. EMBARRASSING! (You’re the first person I’ve admitted this to.)

Oh dear that would be embarrassing although really he should be embarrassed for listening in. You never know maybe his laughing was completely unrelated. I once had someone (cute guy) ask me on the train what I was reading, apparently I was making faces which let them know I was enjoying it. I may not have been completely honest 😶

Thank you. I’m really looking forward to Dear Martin as I’ve heard a lot of great things about it. Adventurous Proposal was good but too short (and a bit sweary)

I’ve been off work for most of the week and the weather hasn’t been great so lots of reading time. There will be less next week.
I was really disappointed in Frat Girl I think because I was so looking forward to it. It’s not bad, just not as good as I was hoping

Ahhhh, I’m so excited for Legendary!! I have a feeling it’s going to be even better than Caraval. I hope you enjoy it!

Almost all of the review say it’s better so I’m really looking forward to it. Very intrigued to finally find out who Legend is.

I debated on reading Genesis – enjoyed the first book, but it will be a while before I can get to this one.

I was on the fence about continuing with this series. I liked the premise of the first one but never really connected with the characters. Genesis still has too many characters for me but it’s much more action packed and answers a lot of the questions (although it did take me a while to remember what happened in the first book)

I did have a few “are these really teenagers?” moments (what teenagers hold dinner parties?) but there’s a great mix of characters which do make it fun reading.

I still can’t get over bits of Call Me By Your Name blasting out in public when you’re not expecting it! I’m going to be interested in what you think of it. As I think I mentioned last week, I struggled a bit with it although I did like the part where the action moves to Rome, as I’ve been there a couple of times and recognised some of the places.

I think it’s my phone as I’ve had it do the same with Spotify. Headphones are now plugged in at all times.
I finished it a couple of hours ago and it’s definitely an experience. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like it (in both a good way and a bad). Some of the scenes are a little on the disturbing side. Even in Rome I think they take intimacy a little bit too far and I may never eat a peach again 😀
I did like the ending, although it was a little sad.

I really liked Call Me By Your Name as a movie because Timothée’s performance was brilliant, but I just couldn’t get into the book. As you said, Elio’s narration comes off as really obsessive and kind of off-putting. I know he’s a teenager, but still, it’s weird.

Yeah, I’m not sure about his character in the book. He’s a little bit too much and there are a few slightly disturbing scenes.
I watched the film last night (before I finished the book) and it is so much better. They seem to have cut back the uncomfortable bits and Timothee is brilliant like you say.

Yay. I didn’t love Sam and Ilsa quite as much as Dash and Lily (there are less laughs and no visits to Santa) but has a similarly quirky and out there mix of characters.

It really is. Possibly too many characters for my goldfish like memory but the story is pretty unique and there’s plenty of action.
