WWW Wednesday: 14th March 2018

The WWW Wednesday meme is currently hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words and is a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned.

WWW Wednesday

To take part all you have to do is answer the following three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

The Fill-In BoyfriendI did technically finish The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West last night but I haven’t really started anything else yet so lets just pretend I’m still reading it. I’ve had this on my Amazon wishlist for a while and finally it appeared on Overdrive so I couldn’t resist picking it up. I’m a big fan of the pretend relationship turning into real feelings plot and West just does it so well. Main character Gia is maybe not the most likeable, particularly in the beginning but she did grow on me and there were plenty of other brilliant and funny characters to make up for her, plus the romance was kinda sweet.

The Sweetest Burn (Broken Destiny, #2)Unfortunately the book I was listening to, The Black Witch by Laurie Forest, returned itself to the library and someone else had a hold so it seems I’m going to have to wait a bit for it. I have however managed to get my hands on The Sweetest Burn by Jeaniene Frost which is the second in the Broken Destiny series. I’m not as keen on this as on the author’s other books (the MC gets on my nerves) but it has been giving me a giggle.

Recently Finished

The Queen’s Rising

It’s been another busy week for me as I’m hoping to put my flat on the market and looking for a new house. This has unfortunately required a big clear out and a lot of cleaning. I have however managed to finish three books this week, the first of which was The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross. I received this from NetGalley and have to confess with the mixed reviews I was a little wary going in. I did however end up enjoying it much more than I expected. I’ve been a little down on YA and YA fantasy at the moment but this restored a little bit of the love. It has a few pacing issues but I did like the author’s writing and will be looking out for a sequel. You can read my full review here.

The Distance Between UsBecause I clearly don’t have enough books on my TBR mountain, I decided after finishing Queen’s Rising to have a look around on Overdrive and, lo and behold, my library have gotten a load of new books in. All reading plans therefore went straight out of the window and I decided to read The Distance Between Us by Kasie West. The only other Kasie West I’d read was On the Fence and while I enjoyed it I hadn’t massively loved it. This however, I did love mostly due to main character Caymen’s sense of humour. I found myself cracking up laughing on the train (little bit embarrassing) and could not put it down. There were a couple of parts that bugged me and the ending seemed a little too sudden but overall this was just such a fun read.Daughter of the Pirate King (Daughter of the Pirate King, #1)

Speaking of fun reads, I needed something to distract me while cleaning (I hate cleaning) so couldn’t resist listening to the audio book of Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller which I also found on Overdrive (I love my library). I think I probably would have preferred to read this (and am thinking about doing this anyway) as I didn’t give it as much attention as it deserved but I did really love it and can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel.

Reading Next

Two of the books that have been on my wishlist forever, Eliza and her Monsters and Girls Made of Snow and Glass also appeared on Overdrive this week so I think they will probably be my next reads. I also have a couple of NetGalley ARCs I’m hoping to get to soon, The Exact Opposite of Okay and The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. I’m actually planning to read Seven Deaths as part of a structured group read on GoodReads’ Nothing But Reading Challenges Group which starts on the 16th. We are a little light on numbers for the discussion so if anyone is interested in joining you can find it here.

Have you read any of the books on my list this week? Any others you’d recommend? As always please feel free to leave comments and links below.

Happy Reading ❤

      • Ouch, I’m jealous. i’m not that lucky with my library. Hehe. The sequel to Daughter of the pirate king is out and I want to read it soon but Im on a book buy ban so I gotta wait for next month. LOL…

      • I wouldn’t even attempt a book buying ban even though I really should. Clearing out my flat and honestly there’s a mountain of books I haven’t read. I’m kind of holding off on Daughter of the Siren Queen cos it’s so expensive right now.

      • LOL… I think physical copies of Daughter of Siren Queen haven’t even reached my country. Hehe… Book buying ban is one of my 2018 goals as I really have to read everything in my shelves. So far i’m succeeding in this ban. 🙂

    • I somehow managed to listen to the full 7 hours of Daughter of the Pirate King in one cleaning (with maybe a break for lunch). 😀 I did love it but think I would have preferred to read it. I may do that then read the sequel although I’m not sure I can wait that long.

      • Oooh, just read it! And then pick up the sequel! 😀
Audiobooks aren’t my thing, unfortunately. I can never concentrate on them and if I can, I still forget what was said / what happened ten minutes after.. Sucks but.. Each his / her own thing, right. 🙂

      • I usually listen to audios when driving as I can give them a lot more attention but I still probably prefer reading as I do take more in.

Where I have found audios work better is with classics. It’s so much easier listening to someone else and often you know the story anyway so if you lose focus it’s not that big of a deal.

      • When I’m driving, it’s my moment to listen to some music, haha. It’s the only time when I do so anymore so yeah.

I’m not really a classics reader. I do have some laying around to pick up some day but I have yet to find a classic I really enjoy.

      • I can totally understand that. Sometimes you just want to blast music and have a bit of a sing along (or maybe that’s just me) 😀

I try to push myself to read at least one or two classics each year. I do often find them a a bit of a struggle hence the audio. If you can find a narrator with a nice voice (Richard Armitage) it makes it so much more enjoyable. I swear there are some narrators I could happily listen to reading the phone book.

      • Nope, not just you! Driving and music is pretty much me destressing after work. Or simply throwing it all out there and letting to with whatever song comes up. We all need to vent once in a while and I love that way of doing it, haha.

I’ve set myself a classics-goal this year as well. I have The Book Thief on my TBR, which is a classic in my opinion, and I’m really looking forward to that one. Although I guess it doesn’t compare to classics like Charles Dickens’ work.
I really cannot imagine liking someone’s voice that much but that just goes to show audiobooks aren’t really my thing. I constantly forget what’s said / happened and then I have to start all over again. I tried it once and ended up just grabbing the book and rereading those chapters. Some thing I even thought “Huh, did I even hear that earlier?!” so yup..

    • The eternal bookworm struggle, so many books so little time 😀 It is worth a read though and the sequel is already out which is a bonus. I’m seriously tempted to splurge on it even though I really should be reading other things.

    • If you’re looking for something a little predictable but fun to read I would recommend Wests books. They’re just easy reading. Hopefully I’ll pick up Exact Opposite soon as everyone seems to be talking about it.

    • I’m a bit torn on it. I love the concept but am worried it’ll be complicated. If you have a copy you should come join the group read. I think I’m gonna need to discuss this as I read.

    • My library uses overdrive for ebooks and audios. When I borrow them I download them to the app on my phone but there’s a time limit on them which for audios is only 21 days. After that it removes itself from your device and you have to borrow it again.

Unfortunately overdrive doesn’t work on my kindle so I have to read on my phone which is not the best but there’s a better selection than in the actual library.

I really need to start the Seven Deaths but all of the comments about how complicated it is have scared me.

  1. I love Kasie West, I can binge read pretty much all of her books and I LOVE the fill in boyfriend, I like the fake relationship turned real sort of trope!!
I’m reading the exact opposite of okay at the moment, I’m about 20% in currently but I’m loving it 😀

    • I started Exact Opposite of Okay but wasn’t in the mood. I really must go back and try again. Although I have just gotten my hands on PS I Like You so it’s very possible the Kasie West book binge will continue 😀

  2. I’ve heard so much good and bad comments about Kasie West I’m a bit scared to see for my myself. I do like the sound of Love, Life and the List. I might give it a try as a summer read.
