Currently Reading

MoxieI started reading Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu on Monday morning and I’m very nearly finished it already, it’s such an easy and enjoyable read. I do love books with feminist themes but have to confess I did have my doubts over whether this book was as good as a lot of the reviews made out. It has however really impressed me and also made me pretty angry about the way the girls in the school are treated. I do think it’s maybe a little exaggerated (or at least I hope it is) but it’s certainly very relevant and has made me think about behaviors and attitudes I’ve experienced.

No progress on my current audiobook Frankenstein I’m afraid. I haven’t really driven anywhere in the last week and I mostly listen in the car. This one seems to be taking forever but I’m determined to finish it.

Recently Finished

The Hazel Wood (The Hazel Wood, #1)

Work is still completely crazy at the moment and to make matters worse we’ve had a lot of snow which has been making getting anywhere a bit of a nightmare. Needless to say I haven’t been managing to read as much as I would like. I have however finished three books this week, the first of which was an ARC of The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. Wow I really loved this book. Considering how completely exhausted and stressed I’ve been it managed to hold my attention and I actually found myself getting lost in it at times. It’s a story about stories and has some Alice in Wonderland type elements to it but it’s really creepy and dark. I’m hoping to have my review up tomorrow but failing that it’ll be up at the weekend.

The second book finished, The Deal by Elle Kennedy was a reread for me. It fit a challenge and it’s a book I really love so I couldn’t resist. It’s just so funny and sweet and I love the relationship between Garret and Hannah. Their banter and flirting just makes me smile so much.They Both Die at the End

The third and final book finished, They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera was probably a bit less of a fun read but I did really love it. It’s one of those books I bought when it first came out but kept putting off because it didn’t feel like the right time. It ended up fitting a challenge though (orange cover) so it gave me the push I needed to brave it. The title does suggest it may not have the happiest of endings but I kept hoping throughout that it was wrong. I absolutely adored MC Mateo and wanted him to have a happily ever after. I’m not saying what does happen but yep this book pretty much broke my heart. My review went up on Sunday and you can find it here.

Reading Next

My reading is still being driven by the Cutthroat Book Club team challenge I’m taking part in at the moment. This is probably one of the most restrictive team challenges I’ve ever taken part in but I have to admit that it’s pushing me to read a lot of the books from my backlist which is no bad thing.

Next up though will probably be The Dry which is my next book club book (the meeting is the 1st so I really need to make a start) followed by The Belles which is an ARC that’s due out at the start of February too. I also want to pick up Iron Gold by Pierce Brown as I’m going to see him when he comes to Glasgow next Thursday on the Red Rising book tour.

    • Everyone seems to rave over the Dry. It makes me both excited and scared to read it.

      Would recommend the Hazel Wood as I really enjoyed it. It’s maybe a little lacking in connection between the characters but the world building is great

    • I didn’t realize it was the same main character in her second book. I’m really looking forward to the Dry but Force of Nature sounds absolutely fantastic. I was just reading the blurb 5 mins ago. I hope you enjoy both

    • I can definitely understand your frustration with NetGalley. Usually the books I really want are US and Canada only, sometimes I chance my arm but I generally end up having to wait and see if it’ll pop up on the UK site. I was actually knocked back for The Hazel Wood when I first requested and eventually got it on the UK one. I hope you manage to get a copy and that you enjoy it as much as I did.

      • oh I’ll try visiting the UK site. I always forget doing that. If my memeory serves me right, it was in UK site that I got The Cruel Prince. 🙂 🙂 Hopefully, I get The Hazel Wood too. I really want to read it coz of the cover. If I like it, I want to buy the physical copy. 🙂 Thanks Ali. 🙂

    • Uh oh, I’m wondering if it’s wise for me to leave The Dry to the very last minute. I don’t think I’ve heard a single bad thing about it so I’m really looking forward to it.

      A few people have said they’re reading her latest book and I did spot it on NetGalley but I’m being good and not requesting anything right now. I hope you enjoy.

    • I just bought a copy of Iron Gold yesterday and bloomin eck it is massive. I have no idea how I’m going to manage to read it plus my bookclub book by next Thursday. I also have to admit I don’t remember a huge amount of what happened in the Red Rising trilogy. This could be a repeat of the last time I met Brown when he asked me who my fave character was and I couldn’t remember a single name 😀

      • Oh my gosh! You MET Brown?!? That is so cool. Thankfully, at the beginning of the book (which I got via Kindle because….size) there is a little overview of the cast of characters that helped me. I cannot wait to hear what you think!

    • Thank you. Moxie was a really fun read and definitely brought out the feminist in me (not that that’s particularly difficult).

      Everyone does keep telling me how brilliant the Dry is. I have got to pick it up soon

    • I’ve actually been really good with ARCs and have hardly requested any. Probably a good thing given this challenge. I don’t think I’ve ever done one with such difficult tasks and my team has been really lucky so far.

      It has been brilliant though finally reading some of my older books. I just need to stop buying now. I swear I’ve bought 10 books in the last 4 days.

    • I’ve just started reading Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe so the plan is to finish that and start the Dry next. From those in the book club who’ve started it they’re all loving it.

      I liked Moxie a lot and found myself really getting into the spirit of it. I’ve always thought I hadn’t really experienced that type of behavior from guys but it has started me wondering.

  15. I’m glad you’re enjoying Moxie! I’ve seen some great reviews for that one, and it sounds quite good!
    The last review I read for The Hazel Wood was from a very, VERY disappointed (and angry) reader. But that’s the thing about reviews, isn’t it? Each just the opinion and experience of the reader. I’m happy you liked it, though! I think the premise for it is awesome. 🙂
