The WWW Wednesday meme is currently hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words and is a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned.

Currently Reading
I still seem to be juggling multiple books at the moment which is very unlike me but as of right now I’m midway through two.
The first of these, Release by Patrick Ness, I was around halfway through last week and have failed miserably to make much progress with. It’s absolutely nothing to do with the book itself as I’ve just not been in the right frame of mind and had other books that I needed to read for challenges and group reads. I think I only have around 100 pages left so it shouldn’t take me long once I get back to it.
The second book I’m currently reading is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. This is a book I received from NetGalley an embarrassingly long time ago and kept putting off because it’s historical fiction, a genre I’m not overly keen on. I finally decided to read it because it was picked as a Group read over on GoodReads (I nominated it) and I’m so glad I did because I’m absolutely loving it. It’s not an action packed or fast paced story but I’m enjoying taking my time over it and the writing is beautiful. It’s one of those stories where I find myself highlighting huge chunks of text all over the place.
Recently Finished
First book finished this week was Obsession by Amanda Robson which I received as an ARC from NetGalley. It’s a psychological thriller about two couples, adultory and obsession. I found it a really engrossing read and when I was reading it literally nothing would distract me. I couldn’t tell you anything about my commutes last week. I did think it was a little on the long side and some variety in voice (there are four narrators) would have been good but otherwise it’s definitely worth reading. You can read my full review here.
I’ve been feeling terrible over the last few days so after finishing Obsession I felt the need for some comfort reading and blasted my way through two sports romances, The Understatement of the Year by Sarina Bowen and Out of Bounds by R.S. Grey. Both were just what I needed although the second was maybe a little OTT in certain places (if you’ve read it, yoga class???).
Reading Next
I’m determined that as soon as I finish my current reads I’ll make a start on Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh. It’s been too long since I’ve read a YA fantasy. I also managed to get my hands on a copy of Thirteen Reasons Why from NetGalley so I want to read it as soon as possible. I watched the TV show a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it so I’m curious as to how they compare.

I am so glad to be reading A Gentleman in Moscow. It’s a lot slower and quieter than my usual reads but I love a good character driven story.

How does Release compare to Patrick Ness’ other novels? I do want to read it, but I’m trying to decide whether to get it immediately or if I can wait a little while.

I have to admit I’ve found it a little slow. It’s more real world than most of his other books and I think as it centres on a gay teenage boy I’m finding it difficult to relate. The writing is fantastic as always but I don’t think it’ll be a favourite. I haven’t finished but I much preferred Monster Calls, Knife and More Than This.

I usually enjoy Patrick Ness, but haven’t been quite as tempted by Release, so it sounds like you are a bit doubtful at the moment too.
Interesting what you say about more variety needed in narrative voices – I’ve noticed that for a lot of psychological thrillers currently being published. It’s almost like it’s a fashion to have multiple narrators, even if it’s not strictly necessary for the story, to elevate the suspense perhaps. But the author hadn’t planned for it initially, so the voices are not sufficiently differentiated. What do you think?

I really want to love Release but I am finding it a little harder to get into. Ness said it was the book he wished had been there when he was a teenage boy so I’m probably not the intended reader.
I don’t mind multiple narrators although it does seem to be a bit of a trend in thrillers. I quite like getting different perspectives but every characters chapter in Obsession was in exactly the same style. I really think if you have multiple narrators you should be able to tell whose chapter it is straight away without chapter headers.

Obsession looks tempting…and I also want to read 13 Reasons Why, as I’m watching it on Netflix, albeit only one episode at a time. Very heavy stuff.

Yeah the show is very full on but it’s the first thing I’ve watched in a while that really drew me in. I’ve heard the books different but also good.

It’s lovely when you pick a book off your TBR that you’ve had for ages and end up really enjoying it. I’ve had that happen a couple of times recently, although it did make me kick myself for not picking the books up sooner. I think sometimes books jump out at us at the right time. I bought Obsession so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it, I’m hoping to read it soon. I read Thirteen Reasons Why a really long time ago and remember thinking it was really powerful, I hope you find it so too. I really want to watch the TV show soon, and I may re-read the book so I can compare them better.

Yep. I’m hoping that I can get to more of the books that have been on my tbr for ages as I’m sure there are some other gems hidden away.
I absolutely loved the TV show of Thirteen Reasons Why. It’s definitely very powerful and shocking in places. I’ve heard it’s quite different from the book so it’ll be interesting to compare the two although I usually try and do it the other way round, read before watching.
